Active setup...tweets keep going out...ideas??

Here's my setup:

Alpine CDA 7998

Alpine MRD F752 5 channel 75X4 +300X1 @4ohms

1 pair Crystal SSCS6 components being run Active

My problem is that this weekend I've had to replace my tweeter for the 3rd time since going Active. When my system was set up to go Active, it was installed and configured by a shop that knows what they are doing, and they're also an authorized seller of both Alpine and Crystal.

Since my HU was configured, I haven't messed with the crossover configurations, and I haven't adjusted any other settings, such as gain, etc.

One of the guys at the shop told me that when you go Active, sometimes you have equipment (speaker) failures like I have, like my tweets repeatedly going out/needing to be replaced. Anyone else have this issue going active, or know what might be causing the problem?

sounds to me like they dont know what they are doing and the tweeter is probably playing full range with bad X-over points. Just cuse a shop tells u something doesnt mean its true. People run active setups for years without problems. I've been running active for little over a month now.

yea I bet your crossover points are way off, or you dont have them crossed at all

Ok, here's how my crossover points are configured on my HU:

High:

5kHz -3db 12db oct

Mid High:

2.5kHz -6db 12db oct

Any ideas after seeing those settings why my tweets are going out?

the high for the tweets looks right, but the mids for 2.5khz up? Is that the only other speaker besides subs in your system? Wonder if the tweets are wired into the wrong channel on the amp

No, I have an Eclipse 12 in the back, which is being run off of ch5 of the amp. Sorry I didn't mention that in my initial setup....I figured it wouldn't matter because my sub has no problems at all.

Just sayin between the subs and mids you have a huge gap, I would say something is wired wrong or you have the gain set a little high, best bet would be to read and learn, then go do redo it yourself

Thanks again, man. I'll probably turn my gains down a little bit for now, and try to read of on some material convering crossover points and adjustments.

Do you have have a good place online that I could check that might be able to help me out?

If your sub is lowpassed at say 100hz and your mids 2500hz up, than your system isnt playing any music in between that

Something isn't right about your setup. I'm going to assume that the tweeter is high passed at 5k and the mid is low passed at 2.5 k. That's a one octave gap between the mid and the tweet. That thickens the plot a bit. There's no reason it should be high passed that high.

You said that the mid is high passed at 2.5 k. You might want to check that to make sure. Low passed at 2.5k would make more sense, but still is confusing with the tweeter crossed over so high.

Check your connections. Make sure they don't have one of the tweeters high passed at 2.5k, or worse low passed.

That shop doesn't seem to know what it's doing. Even if you made a typo and meant the mid was "low passed" at 2.5k, having a full octave between the crossover points is unheard of.

i would start by running my mids from about 100hz to about 4~5khz. then the tweets from 4~5khz and up.

something you have sounds messed up. you need to tripple check and make sure your wires are going where they are supposed to be going and getting the signal they should be getting.

sounds to me like your filters are messed up, and you may have hooked a RCA input or speaker wire to the wrong place. also check your amp(s) to make sure that the filters\boost are all set to off\flat.

at 5khz high pass the tweeter shouldnt be failing. Switch the filter to 18db on the tweeter . Sounds to me you just might have to much power going to them. Check your gain setting and make sure it isnt turned upto much. Remember tweeters dont need alot to be heard!
