active?passive?

passive = crossed over after amplification (between the amplifier and the speaker)

active = crossed over prior to amplification (either in the amp, in the HU or with an external active xover)

Active gives you much more tuning ability, such as the ability to set the crossover point and slope, both of which are normally a fixed value in a passive xover.

Active = You have control

Passive = They have control (i.e. The Man)//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

Seriously though. IMO if you run your system active, you are basically saying that you know more about sound dynamics, transient response, phase control, linearity, cross over slopes, etc then the speaker manufacturer who built the x-over network for that speaker. Don't hate me, it's just my stinkin opinion - but since you asked...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Not really.

Passive xovers are designed to optimize the performance of the speakers themselves.

With an active setup, you can optimize the performance of your speakers in your vehicle, and in your install
