Hi,.. I've been lolly gagging around for a few weeks now on learning and comparing speakers.. it's time to just order. So here's a list of what I'm considering..
First: this is going into a 2008 Nissan 350Z.
Second: They are going into factory locations without modification other than spacers on mids.
Third: Factory specs are 6.5" Mids in doors per usual,.. Factory speakers are 10watt Clarions (paper weights),.. that from the factory have a 1" spacer built into them on the front. Thus clearance from front mount back is very shallow. WITH a 1" spacer speakers that are 2.5" barely clear, so have to keep this in mind.
Fourth: Factory tweeters are .75 (3/4") not 1". But, plenty of people have had some sets with 1" tweeters fit in the factory location using factory grill without an space problems. I'll try to order something where the tweeter fits, but if it doesn't.. I'll hesitantly modify as little as I have to , to make it fit. But the 6.5" door speakers must fit in that shallow space,.. not putting pods or extending the factory grilles. (Goal of this is to keep it factory looking).
Fifth: I like lots of treble,.. so I may have an ear that likes the "harsh" tweeters,.. but to be safe I am trying to find a tweeter that is silk and/or cloth.. Trying to shy away from really harsh tweeers.
Also,.. the factory tweeter location is not optimal. It's "Off Axis" in the Sail panels: Here is a picture of the factory Sail panel with tweeter :
Here is a list of speakers that people have fit (or haven't) in the factory slot one way or another from 2010 forum post in the 350Z. (Thought it might help give some idea of what would fit and what wouldn't)
CDT - 61cv's (I've heard CDT's are all good.. so if you have some shallow mount, or other CDT 6.5" components, feel free to chime in.)
Rainbow SLC 265.25 NG's (Dated, so may be hard to find)
JL C2650 Evolution C2's
Alpine SPR-60C's
Rockford Fosgate T165-S 6.5-Inch Power Series (These fit even with the 1" tweeters)
There are more,.. just can't think of them off hand. But you get the idea here.
Thing is, I'm literally about to pull the trigger on ordering a set. You can see this is a mid-range budget,.. Cheaper the better, but I can spend up to $225-250 if the speaker warrants it. Oddly enough it seems some of the better options are $100-150 a pair.
And, I will be running an amp that will be capable of putting out 120watts RMS @4ohms to these speakers. Ideally I'd like to run 70-100watt RMS speakers to give the amp a little headroom, but technically will go up to 120watt RMS speakers if I have to. Out of personal preference I'd like to not exceed the 120watts RMS of the amp with the speaker.
I know I've posted a similar question, but this is the final one. Give your thoughts here,.. and I understand it's going to be different recommendations from different people. But again to re-hash:
Component Speakers for a Nissan 2008 350Z for Front,.. 6.5" mids and 3/4" tweeter (can squeeze 1" tweeters in , in some applications).
Wattage on speakers RMS should range between 70-100watts RMS (per speaker) preferably.
For the low end I am running a JL Audio 8" sub in sealed enclosure @ 150 watts RMS. Amp will be either CT Sounds, or Kenwood eXcelon (The CT sounds is a/b and much larger, the Kenwood is Class D, and fits much better.)
Thanks for any last minute input and I am not stuck on any brands here.. not brand loyal.
