About to order a macbook Pro for Christmas but before I do...

Asus has some decent laptops. Also look into custom ordering one for the price of a MBP, there are some companies that do it very well. Xoticpc.com is one that comes to mind.

Microsoft Security Essentials is very good, and on top of that it's free. I've been using it for a while now. Detects things others don't, plus it's not bloated shit. Mac isn't necessarily safer than Windows, it just has always been less used, therefore less desire for hackers to spend time looking for holes. I wouldn't doubt if we see that change soon though. There was that big virus not too long ago for Macs.

Is that xotic site legit? I have like 800 to spend on a laptop now.

Hey guys. I'm kinda' a noob to the whole 'computer' stuff, but I'm considering buying a 3-4 yr old HP laptop off my buddy. It's got 200-something GB of memory and 4 GB of RAM. How long can I expect it to last, on average?

How much are you paying? Just having those two specs don't tell how well the laptop will actually do. RPM of HDD? processor? GPU? I've had an HP laptop dv series for over 5 years now, no problems.

No idea, I'll ask him tomorrow - see if he knows the model of the laptop, then I'll be able to get you those specs. Anyway, I was giving those specs to see what it might be worth. He wants $200.

Awesome thread jack!

Yeah it is. 3 of my coworkers here have ordered laptops from them, and they are nice. I haven't personally ordered anything from there though, as I prefer to build desktops and only buy low end laptops for travel.

Just kidding bro, I don't care.

I still have a windows laptop that i can upgrade the ram and put a SSD in but its become very buggy since I installed Windows 8 and has sudden crashes and will go to sleep at random times even if I'm in the middle of typing. That was my fault and not the computers. I run Ubuntu on it now since its stable and 8 ***** so bad. I might backup all my information and do a clean install of windows 7 again. I think I will go with the MBP and then build a nice windows based gaming desktop.

Get off my thread *******!

Thanks for the reply. It's got windows 7 on it, that's all I'm gonna need. I'll use it for very little gaming - I actually plan on mainly using it for creating commentaries.

Waste of money. There is absolutely nothing that a Mac can do that a Windows cant. Macs are not better for video editing, photoshop, etc. They have the same exact hardware as a Windows based PC does, but with a price inflation for a brand tag. Dual booting can also be done on Windows. Run Mac in a VM if you really want Mac. Also Macs can and will get viruses so that is also a moot point.

Basically you can get a cheaper Windows laptop with the same hardware as a Mac is what it comes down to.
