About to order a macbook Pro for Christmas but before I do...

At this point, even for the higher dollar, the MBP is the way to go, especially when you can DualBoot with BootCamp. I hate to say it because I'm a PC guy, too. Just make sure you get AppleCare+ on that thing because if something goes wrong with it, they will do their BEST to charge you an arm and a leg for it. I can't count how many friends of mine went it and had to fork over 400 bucks because the "logic board malfunctioned."

I have a Macbook Pro collecting dust under my coffee table.. put it on craigslist once, but people dont intend to spend 700 on a computer daily.. Anyways I bought it for my wife who didnt like apples OS as well as Windows.

When you buy a Mac, you buy it because of the build quality and parts(along with the obvious OS difference), not for specs. Their price:performance ratio is really not as good as most decent Windows-based laptops, so again, by buying a Macbook, you do it because it's a Macbook, not because it's better than anything else at its respective price range.

That said, what are you looking to do on this laptop? Will it be a desktop replacement, or is portability an issue? Gaming? Photo/video manipulation? CAD? There are several different types of laptops, all with different strengths, and they play different roles. If you're just using the laptop for basic things, like Internet browsing, e-mail, music, etc., then the most important factors may be weight and battery life, while if you deal with graphics, the display is the most important factor, along with a high speed, quad-core CPU. In other cases, you'll want an optical out, or a SSD, etc. I can't stress this enough; hard drive capacity, CPU, and RAM, while are some of the main aspects of most specifications listings, are not the most important.

By the way, you can always get a Windows laptop, and then get Mac OS X separately.

I only want to point out I got my laptop with a gt 660 video card, 256gb Sata 3 drive, 1tb HDD, Blu-ray, quad core i7, and 16gb ram for about the same price as my roommates macbook pro, and I put osx86 on mine. Runs very well, and best of both worlds with high end components. It's like buying kicker for the name and power handling, or buying something less known with better SQ and power handling for cheaper/same price imo

did you build it yourself or order it and put OsX on it?

Ordered from ibuypower.com

installed OSX86 myself. I did a ton of research and made sure everything I was getting was compatible. Check out tonymac to see if everything is compatible. If you really need mac os though, it's probably going to be a lot easier to just order from apple.

this whole i own a mac and never had a virus, doesnt make it any better a machine. and a pc can easily be in the same boat... you can easily run any operating system on any laptop. end of discussion.

next is performance, it dpends what you need, IMO PC can always be better for the $.

Sager, Clevo, Lenovo, ASUS. thats it. most others will leave you leery of how long itll last until something goes wrong.

next, it depends what your budget it. mine was the best bang for the buck under $800.

i managed to get a lenovo y480 for under $800 and it was a great buy no questions asked.

i was looking at the asus touch screen line, sch- something.

also was looking into a HP envy 7.

toshiba portege has a nice machine too i suppose.

Look into XoticPC dot com.
