A/V Receiver Problem

Every time I turn my receiver on it just stays on the welcome screen and will not respond to any buttons pushed. It was a cheap Sony surround sound system from walmart but the waranty expired. It has to be something internal, nothing was spilled on it but the roomamtes had the cable box on top of it. Could it have overheated? I know some of you guys are pretty good with the guts of electronics so if anyone has any ideas im open, I really dont want to go buy another one
