A question for papermaker

Ok so getting out of the military i could go two routes, straight into the apprentiship program, starting at 12 an hour working up to 31 an hour after 5 years and journeyman. It also require me to relearn algebra before i even get accepted into the program. Or i could use my GI bill for a degree in electrical engineering, test for journeyman without the hours on the job. Id also get paid 1500 a month just to go to school full time while using the GI bill. Id probably get a small part time job driving bus while in school. Im just so torn. Its a shame you dont like the career. Electrical work has always fascinated me since i was a we lad in high school, and still does to this day

Do yourself a huge favor and go for the Electrical Engineering degree.

Your understanding of the aviation industry is incorrect. Boeing is the white sheep in my opinion.
30/hr is nothing considering the regulations and requirements for working on these systems. machinists may be a little lower than others, but at the same time the working knowledge to work with those systems is phenomenal

start talking 40/hr plus full benefits and i'll consider that reasonable for an experienced worker. i'm fresh out of college and have been offered 30-35/hr but that doesnt include benefits or taxes

From my understanding, just talking to lots of diff people that would not hire Boeing employees...esp the machinist there. They know nothing compared to other machine shops. And the fact that they are overpaid. Overpaid to do little work...**** who doesn't want that job?!

Become a mailman! $17ish starting and your military so your foots already halfway in the door. You get to walk around all day and enjoy the weather. It’s stressful sometimes but so isn’t any other job. I’ve been here 9 months and I’ve already made $37k. If you get into the city side you start as a city carrier assistant ~$17hr but as soon as you make regular it’s a $5 raise. There’s cost of living adjustments, step increases, it’s 1.5 time after 8hrs and 2x time after 10hrs, and you get a pension. It’s not a glorious job but it’s a federal job so nobody can **** with you. There’s always overtime to so if you want $$$ it’s there.

Ohh that sounds nice. Especially considering federal and government jobs allow you to put your years in service of service towards your retirement there

Exactly! And when you take the 473 exam to get considered for hiring you get an automatic 10 points added to your score cuz your military. So say you got a 75 they add 10 points to make it 85.

That would be perfect for me. Once i get my foot in a career i like, i may never use my gi bill. And itd be such a waste. So why not get a simple but good paying partime, go to school and learn something for the three years i have it

I think they pick the hours for you, you don't pick them. Best thing to do is go down there in person and ask. Or hop onto the website for local openings 8in your area in hopes it has that info for you.

Do you drive that little white truck around residential neighborhoods, or businesses around the areas? Or use that little cart with wheels and a long handle? My grampa was a mailman...but since they didn't have wheels at the time, it messed up his perplexion...hurt his shoulders. Guess on one was smart enough to use wheels instead of carrying loads on their backs a lot.

Yea I drive that stupid little truck. Most of the routes around here are park and loop so you just drive to a central point then walk loops carrying mail and packages and ****. They kinda got it divided up here, pretty weird. One will carry packages only and the other mail only. But....have gotten mail and packages at the same time. Also have gotten packages w/o mail...

Only 8 months but my dad has 30 years in, my mom has 20 years in, both carriers. My grandfather was a 20 year carrier right after ww2 and my uncle is a 30 year clerk. I guess you could say my destiny was chosen for me early on and I’ve been avoiding it till this past year lol!

I could be wrong, but it depends on what components they're working with..I'll leave it there. If you get to talk to them ask for me what specifically they produce?

If they're pushing buttons on a CNC, I get it. Actually having working knowledge of lathes and mills is a whole different story
