I am doing the Big 3 upgrade again because im getting a bigger alternator(220 Amps, 120 Idle, Irragi) I finished the grounds and all I need is the Positive battery terminal to the alternator. What I was wondering do you really need a fuse in between the alternator and battery cable? If I do what size would I need?

Do you NEED to fuse this, no. But you SHOULD fuse it to protect the system installed. That way if a conector breaks or a tie used to route the wire or what ever happens and the wire grounds out the fuse blows and no harm is done to the vehicle system. Once again like all other times you should be fusing as close to the batteries as possible. As for size, if the alt can do 220 than you should fuse at probally 250.

If you are in a car accident, do you want a live wire capable of transferring 500A to a dead short in your trunk? Carpet + Large Spark = not good. Thats the reason you fuse the main wire, protect you and your investment from a fire.

ok this makes absolutely no sense at all, considering your stock system, reguardless of the amperage difference, does not have a fuse, i think people forget that a alternator isn't putting out power constantly, they haven't since the 60's. maybe some people need a lesson on how alternators work again?

Sorry, I just saw the words "A fuse in the +" and stopped there, thought he was talking about the power wire to the amp.

And there is in some cars a fuseable link between the two

The alternator isn't putting out power constantly, but the battey is hooked to the other end of that wire and it is capable of putting out power at any time. With that in mind it can't hurt to put in a fuse as close to the battery as possible on that wire as well just in case you have a short in the enine compartment.

Yes it should be fused to be 100 percent safe

and my crx had a fuse there and i would venture to say most cars do have a fuse.. it goes into the main fuse block under the hood it isnt on the wire itself...

but i know many people who dont fuse it... so the choice is yours young grasshopper

do not fuse according to the amperage of the alt, fuse according to the size of the wire... in this case a 0 ga with a 250 amp fuse will work fine... i personally don't have a fuse on mine but im fukin crazy

best buy more than one fuse then if you do fuse it, because if you somehow manage to blow that fuse while your driving down the interstate......yea you'll be stuck there a while waiting for an anl fuse

What if u fuse it thru the FUSE box and the 250 ANL in line fuse... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif THEN ur good, unless u blow both... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Ps. thats what Im planning to do, go thru fuse box and ANL in line fuse... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Not sure I follow you there. If the two fuses are in series, you're hosed eiher way and the fuse panel won't get you a big enough fuse to be worth a ****. Fuse to the size of the wire with an ANL and unless you short the alt out and the battery starts charging it, you won't ever blow it. A 250A fuse will flow over 300A for some time befor it blows. If you alt can't approch that kind of output you can't blow the fuse except when it really needs to blow, i.e. a short.
