My wife loves to learn about this stuff and asks me questions all the time, if her guy doesn't want to teach her, we might as well do it.

Boxes are designed for the speaker due to its specifications. You can build a box out of many other things other than wood (fiberglass, metal, plastic etc.)

Why a speaker needs a box is very hard to explain in simple terms. Basically each sub is designed with a set number of boxes in mind.

Some subs do not need a box at all. They can run "free air". More commond enclosures are ported (a tuned port for a certain frequency) or sealed (no port and the box, as stated, is sealed.
