9886 vs 9884 vs anything else

Hey, so I'm getting my first car soon and have been looking at some head units so I can get one right away. I will mainly use it for my iPod but want to have the ability to play CD's for those times I don't have my iPod. Anyways, I've been thinking about going with either the Alpine CDA-9886 or the CDA-9884. So I was wondering what would be the better choice for me. The way I see it is that the 9886 has a better screen and some different technical stuff that I don't understand. So, if you could clear things up on how the 9886 differs from the 9884 that would be great!

Both can go active. The 9886 has a much better display and a USB cord. Other than that they are actually quite similar. The 9886 still needs the KCE-422i for Ipod, just like the 9884. You can't use the USB for it.

I've played with both.

Go to Alpines site and compare the two.

Both units come with the KCE-422i for the iPod though, so its not like you got worry about buying one seperately like I had to with my 9887 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif. My buddy has the 9884 and it's pretty decent. I would personally go with the 9886 though.

my guess is he doesnt know what going active means so i dont think its a big deal on what can and cant.

i use the 98816 and for the price i didnt get what i expected. other then the display which is not a big deal to me, it was exactly like me 9856 that i sold to buy it. no different settings/options unless you start to go active which i am not doing.

wouldnt advise this deck for someone not going active or who doesnt need 4v preouts like i didnt need but just wanted.

I had/have a CDA-9884 and replaced it with the CDA-9886. First off, I upgraded for only one reason, 2v preout vs a 4v preout. Now, I love my CDA-9886, but it didn't really yield the difference I was hoping for. Both are good HUs, but the preouts, at least the sub preout anyway, are weak. I myself might end up buying an Audiocontrol Overdrive (line driver) to bump the voltage up going to my Kicker SX1250.1 that powers my 2 Polk SR124-DVCs. I've had an issue with having to turn the gain way up on my SX to get a good amount of bass, and after going through all the possibilities (wiring, etc), I found that there are others who have had this problem with their new Alpines. I definitely must say that I miss my Alpine CDA-9827 that got stolen. Alpine seems to have slid a little bit in their quality, but I'm not giving up on them.

Going active is the ability to fine tune the mid and high level. When someone goes active, they would be running amp power to the mid and tweeters, one off each channel of a 4 or 6 channel, without using the supplied crossover, that is why the HU has to be capable of different crossover points.

The difference between 2 and 4 volts is the deck with 4 volts will supply a cleaner and stronger signal through your RCA's to your amp. Therefore, you won't have to turn the gain up as much to achieve the rated power your amp puts out. A gain is not a volume knob. You don't just turn it up and leave it there, A gain has to be matched to your signal from the HU's RCA's.

Spend your time reading the sticky's and you won't need to keep replacing broken/fried equipment, since you don't have a car yet. That way, when you do eventually get your car, you won't spend $100 on a capacitor, instead, put it towards a decent battery.
