8" Subs

2 8's should be the same or more as a good 10" since 2 8's has 16" of surface area to push air oppose to a single 10-12" sub...
Not how it works my good man. Not how it works.

You can't just say 8" + 8" = 16", therefore it has more cone area. There is a T/S parameter to tell you exactly how much surface (cone) area a particular driver has; it's called Sd. You must compare the total Sd of the two drivers in question in order to determine which has more cone area, and how much more cone area. Using your theory, two 8's should have more cone area than a 12" speaker. The RE RE8's have Sd of 195cm^2, so they have a total Sd of 390cm^2 for the pair, whereas the RE RE12 has an Sd of 500cm^2. As you can see, the 12" clearly has more surface area than the pair of 8's.

And even then, cone area alone does not determine output. You need to consider how much linear displacement each driver (or pair of drivers) have. Total linear displacement can be found by multiplying Sd * Xmax.

squeak has done it again..........u da man sqeak

side note......if u want a decent spl output, u need atleast 8 8's....i've heard 8 round solobaric 8's being pushed by 2 fosgate bd1000 and let me tell u ........the wow factor was in full muthafuc.kin effect......u will not be dissaponted

80

8 8's lol I wonder if I could fit that many, maybe I'll do 8 8's with the RE8's since they are pretty cheap, the only thing I need to know really, is would two 8W7's outdo a setup like 4 8Kv2's or 8 RE8's etc etc.

What do you mean, "outdo"?

For SPL, more swept area is always going to be an advantage. However, RE 8's have notoriously poor SQ, something that my ears tend to agree with.

Now a wall of 8W7's would be sweet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Anyone got the $$$ for it? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

my dad runs a 8" velodyne sub with 2000 digital watts rms
While I'm trying to comprehend what exactly a "digital watt" is, there's no denying that Velodyne subs kick major ***. SVS & Velo make some of the best commercially-available subbass setups for HT...

anything comparable for a car?
The 8W7, and possibly the TC Sounds prototype LMT 8" driver are the beastliest little ones that I've heard of.

The eD.8ax (the Monster 8") could also be up there, but that's so overmotored and overdesigned that it really isn't meant to be an everyday woofer. My apologies to those of you that happen to own one...the Great 8 Challenge didn't bode well for it.

my dad runs a 8" velodyne sub with 2000 digital watts rms... that thing is unreal.

My home subwoofer is a Velodyne as well. Its a 10" servo controlled with a 80 watt amp. I paid $970 back in '93 and it is STILL going strong 12 years later.

Will 4 9Kv2's with a Nine.1 on them (about 215W) sealed outdo two 8W7's in SPL, yet still sound as good at the W7's? Also, how much deadening do you think I need for the RX-8 trunk?

Because 4 9Kv2's with a Nine.1 and some eDead (should I get the paint on or the actual deadener) is around $700.

Just pricing out the 2 8W7's if I can get the 8W7 for $200, plus a new W7 for about $300 I need to find an amp for $200 and I doubt I will be able to do that, plus price of deadening.

wow this thread is helping me out so much!!! i was actually thinking about getting 4 eD 9kv.2s... in fact i ordered one last night so i can get the baffles built and everything... but for the price, i think i might change to the RE8's. i read that these things pound. ive heard 2 RE12s in my friends car... but has anyone had experience with both of these subs? im willing to pay the extra money for the 9kv.2s, but i just wanted to hear what you guys think. however, i think if i go with the RE8's, then i can use that extra saved money to move up from the kx400.1 amp to the kx600.1 amp, or something similar... what do you guys think?
