Hi all. Apologies for the no-doubt newbie post ....

So I picked up a van that has an amp that I'd like to use. It's a Mutant Ascension 5. It has 4 regular RCA inputs and a separate sub input:

I'm looking to run fronts, rears and a sub.

Does the input selector mean i only have to run 1 pair of RCA inputs, which it'll then split into the 4 & sub outputs? Or will i need an RCA lead for each? The head unit only has four RCA outs (i think, van is in the garage at the mo)

Thanks for any clarification. I've only ever installed 2 channel amps up until now

Yes. You will use the switch accordingly to your needs. If you want to just run one pair of RCA back use that, feed it a full range signal, and the on-board crossovers on the amp will hopefully be able to get the right signal to your speakers. The second position should be running just front and rear from the head unit back (full range) and the amp should use a sum of all 4 for signal to the sub channel.

Really if you're using this as a 5 channel for front, rear, and sub and your head unit has all those RCA outputs using a 6 channel RCA all the way back and the third position on the switch would be best as you would have thee most flexibility to control level and crossover options from the head unit which is typically most convenient. If your head unit has 5-6 RCA outputs I'd suggest using them all.

Ah perfect. I've already routed a single set of RCA leads to the existing (2 Chan) amp so didn't want to pull the dash apart again to fit extra sets if i didn't have to.

Thanks for your prompt & detailed explanation :)

I would keep the amp you have and keep the components. Place the components in some universal door pods, and look at getting a powered SAS 8"...

A 6 channel and a single sub amp would be my choice. Or a 2ch, 4ch and a sub amp. You don't need 2 channels for subs.
