Would I be better off tuning to like 35 for a shorter port and have some of the port on the ouside to give the subs more airspace?

I wouldn't since the port really doesn't take up that much space. Each inch is only .031ft^3.

Just go 2 inches taller on the whole box and lose some leg room! problem solved!
