Kenwood KDC 138 problem/question

I recently purchased a kenwood kdc-138 for a kia spectra5. When I install the head unit it shorts out the passenger side tail light. I'm going out on a limb as to if anyone would know a common cause of this. I soldered the ground that comes off the unit to the ground on the wiring harness. Although when I went back and looked in the install guide kenwood says ground to chassis. Should this wire be grounded to the chassis instead of the ground that comes off the wiring harness? Also this may have a lot to do with it but there is a ground (presuming) that comes from the car that connects to my stock head unit. On the kenwood there is no place to connect it. Could this have an affect of why the tail shorts out?
