4k watts daily batt or alternator first?

IMO get an HO alt and find some cheap batt to throw in the back until you can afford more. The ALT is the power source, if you have the money to buy it buy it. batts are always around for pretty good prices around here

I'm in a similar boat... deciding which part of the electrical is more important.

I bought an alt first... because I'm a greedy fool who wants 14.4V rather than 12.5V. If more bats are needed, I'll fill out with batteries later. 1 yellowtop should be able to handle the transient load, while the alt is increasing output to match the system's draw.

As for the stock alt, 3 battery discussion:

If you listen to 50% rap and 50% SQ/detail stuff, you won't ever need to charge your batteries... since the 50% SQ stuff will give them plenty of time to charge. If you blast everywhere you go, on bass-heavy music, then you'll need more charging power (alt or home charger).

ya im going with HO alt first. then add a battery. and see if it does the trick. if not keep adding this way i do not buy like 3 batts first and only need 2 or what ever.

rap metal and techno all i listen to

if you were closer, i have a guy that can get me 125ah sealed batts for $100. but shipping would be very expensive. they weigh alittle over 100lbs
im willing to pay shipping if total cost is under 170 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

what kind of companies sell batteries like that in local markets? dont know anywhere locally that would sell high current agm batteries. we have a battery source but i havnt checked there. their big thing seems to be golf cart batteries.

I agree w/ the Alt 1st... Most cars put a small enough Alt in to only work for everything in the car and may leave 10 -15 % for extra stuff.. Your amps will need all and even more of the power of that alt.

Also, I could be wrong here, but arent batteries main purpose is to start the car. After the car is running, it runs off the alt.

The car will run off whatever power source it gets. The difference between the batt and alt is, the alt will continue to create power, while the batt's supply is finite.

hes not a battery dealer or anything. i dont know what he does exactly but he said he had gotten them a couple months ago and ended up not needing them. he had 10 of them last time i talked to him.

and shipping is like $90 through ups to georgia

First off, you are guessing at 1800 watts. Second, even if your 1800 watt (average) guess was correct, at 12 volts that's 150 amp current draw, on a stock alt that is likely less than that, and also must support the car itself. You are trying to convince us that a stock charging system/alt can support a 4kw system due to transients and imp rise, this just tells me you have little to no experience with such a situation. Third, adding more batts to a system whose power supply is insufficient will only prolong the inevitable, dead batts.
Impedance rise does not affect input current draw for the amplifier, only supplied power to the speakers themselves.

Extra batts will help the situation, but it will still require additional charging with the stereo not playing. That means either regularly driving without the stereo on, or as others suggested, charging the system over night with an external batt charger.
This is what I have been saying the entire time.As for 12v whos car runs at 12v most are 14v which puts it roughly at 130a draw.

You are tryin to get to in depth with this.I in no way have said that he will be just fine with the situation.I simply stated that he would be better off getting batteries then an alt.Which most would suggest. Then I said he would need to do prolonged driving in order to properly charge the bank of batteries.I even said it wouldn't be a bad idea to use a charger occasionally. My comment was more towards annarbor stating he charges 2-3 times a week which is not neseccary.

So slow your role buddy.....we're on the same page;)

people on this board seem to enjoy arguing... but i think i will check locally for battery suppliers... or if anyone in ga/fla has some im willing to drive (have somone else drive me suspended licesense sucks) within 2 hours to pick up $$$
