4 ohm stereo vs 2ohm mono...what the ****?

Why would you want to send 2 different signals to 2 different subs.?? Makes no sense. Its sort of like in home theater, you use one sub to handle all the low frequencies, not 2 seperate ones.

It's not that you WANT to send two different frequencies to two different subs, sometimes you have to. Take me for example. I have a 2 channel stereo amp and two SVC 4 ohm subs. I have to wire one sub to each channel because i cannot bridge the amp at 2 ohms, it's not stable. So each sub has to have it's own channel, and, inevitably, it's own signal. But actually i don't think it matters anymore because i have a sub preout on my head unit and i think it's a mono signal.

Yep, sub pre-outs only push mono signals.

in reply to a reply put up on this post, im not sure about you guys, but i have songs that have left and right bass, decending the bass from one side to the other, plus, you have a nice size gain when you use multiple subs, atleast thats what i have heard off sites like, http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm a very very useful guide to learning things about audio, electronics, and other great stuff!
Well, I will agree with you with that some music has deep bass frequencies in stereo. Unfortuanately, in a car environment, meaning your subs are right next to each other in the trunk, in most cases anyway. You wouldn't really be able to differentiate left from right, they are too close to one another. Thats why most systems are set up with mono subwoofers.

No you wouldn't be able to differentiate for left and right channels in direction... but unless both subs share a common chamber there would be an audible difference. For instance a few of my bass songs have this stereo separation in the subs. When i had my subs separated into two chambers i could tell that the two were playing two separate signals while when i combined the chambers i got more of a muffled sound.. eventhough i was still running stereo on my amp. Knowing this would damage my speakers i changed it to a mono signal.
