350-400 rms amp and box ideas

I have one 12w3v3 and i am running a Orion 4002 amp to it, It is in a ported box. I am probably going to get a secound 12 and wanted to get some suggestions.

I am looking for an amp to deliver 350 to 400 rms to each sub at 4 ohms. I want it to be as good as or better than my Orion. I was thinking about a US amps but they are hard to find.

Also what are your opinions on either a sealed rear-firing box or a ported box in a Nissan Altima trunk.

Any ideas appreciated

Well, the choice of ported or sealed is up to you, I prefer sealed. As for the amp though you'll probably be stuck with bridging a 2ch amp to get that kind of power at 4ohms.

Why not run them in parallel and get them to lower than 4 ohms? What is the VC config on them?

they are single voice coil so if I bridged them I could run a 2 ohm amp?
Not sure if I figured that out right.
if each is 4 ohm you can wire them into parrellel (++ -- on the subs, then to the amp) and you'll have 2 ohms... this brings mono amps back into the picture. Look for an amp that does 1,000w at 2 ohms. It'll prob be kinda expensive, 1kw is way more common at 1ohm for cheaper amps.

My suggestions would be to scrap the subs if you are going to try and run 1kw, unless you have alot of money to burn... Check the classifieds for amps, I have made quite a few stellar purchases of our forums classifieds section.

Thanks, I'm probably gonna wire them parallel then, because I already have one sub.

As far as sealed vs. ported I was curious which would sound better, deeper, louder.

Well ported will be louder, and possibly deeper depending on how you tune it. Sealed boxes generally have better SQ. You need to decide which of the 3 is most important to you.

SQ + deep = oversized sealed box, which will lower the power reqs on your subs which might be nice

SPL + deep = ported box.

I suppose wiring them in parrellel and running them with 800w will do the trick. I just like to have headroom in my amps...

That makes sense cause I was listening to 2 sealed 10's and they weren't nearly as loud a my 1 sealed 12.

So a sealed box would reduce the amount of power needed from the amp to the sub, or would it allow me to to run more power to the sub than in a ported box?

No.... not quite. Making an oversized sealed box allows for less power and a deeper hitting sub.

A properly sized sealed box will generally allow the sub to handle more power than a ported box, but I doubt by a noticeable amount compared to a properly sized ported box....

As for the volume differences, the amount of power ,sub design, and install matter alot more than size of the subs...

One more question and I will leave you alone, how do you tune the box?
Thanks
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif... well for a ported box the area of the port is how you tune it. Go download Winisd and read some tutorials.. it's a little complicated at first but it's worth it. WinISD can tell you, based on your subs T/S parameters, what size of box you need. Then tell it you want to tune it to 32hz (normal tuning for daily driving tuned boxes) and it will tell you how big to make the box and the port in sq feet.

I'm looking for an amp to do between 800 and 1000w @ 2ohms.

I considered the 1200d, but its a little pricey, any ideas for around $200?

That was my point earlier... 800-1000w at 2ohms is going to be expensive. It'd be cheap at 1ohm and reasonable at 4ohms....

Oh, guess I didn't get that, but I just noticed a refurbished 1200d on Ikesound for $180, how reliable and effective do you think it would be?
