McCain proposes $300M prize for new auto battery

FRESNO, Calif. - Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday that the search for alternatives to the country's dependence on foreign oil is so urgent that he's willing to throw money at it.

The Arizona senator proposed a $300 million prize for whoever can develop a better automobile battery, and $5,000 tax credits for consumers who buy new zero-emission vehicles. The latest proposal is in addition to his support for overturning the federal ban on offshore oil drilling.

Whats a new battery going to do? Absolutly nothing for us, maybe hes trying to distract the current alternative projects that are actually making progress. This prize thing seems more like a draw back than anything. Pretty sure we had battery powered cars in the 90s and they failed. Seems like now we need to focus on wind and hydrogen power. Things that are cleaner and way more efficient than batteries will ever be.

a123 Systems is ahead of the game already. check their crap out.
Ahead of John McCains game but Lithium Ion is not the future, it still creates pollution and lithium ion batterys still have half lifes and all though they can re-charge they will still need to be replaced at some point. Like any lithium ion battery they will only last so long, the worst part is the costs of Lithium Ions. Not sure if you noticed but there not the cheapest things in the world. We mine as well just cut holes in our floor boards and "Flinestone" around town until they develop hydrogen or wind more.

So, do you think McCain knows something the public doesnt? A different way to store energy?

There's the organic battery guys I remember from some show on Discovery but that wasn't gonna make a car do anything.

Anyone thought of what will have to happen to EVERY CAR OUT THERE TO THE DATE of a 'switchover'??? Landfills already don't want CRT TVs for the upcoming digital cutover in Feb.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I bet oil companies protect their interests until they run out of oil through lobbyists and patents and who knows what other crappy tactic.

If he can somehow build enough nuke plants, there won't be a need for oil for as energy. Then, so long as we all drive around modified golf carts that get decent range, there is the answer to our dependance on foreign oil.

In theory at least. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

theyz gonna buy all the battery patents, and then hold them, so they can force oil on us still.
exactly, there is no incentive for any company within the oil industry to introduce an alternative fuel; they will lose billions and billions of dollars they have become accustomed to making off of oil.

what I really like is how well Bush has used his influence to have the Saudi's increase their production, but yet the Saudi's don't know why there is a "shortage" and the high price that we are all experiencing...
