3 JL W312's HELP!

Hey guys, just purchased the 2002 version of the JL w3 12". I got all three, for $90 each, brand new, not reconditioned, just left over stock from the older version. Instead of the cone being flush, it has like a bubble in the middle.

What would yall recomend for a amp, they are the 2 ohm version, and thought about running all 3 off of a JL 500/1, not turned up all the way. Any other ideas as far as an amp around $500 that comes with a good warranty? What about a headunit $250 or under? im looking at the Alpines. Is it a good idea to try to build my own box, rather than shell out the $275 that they will "custom" make the box at tweeters? Do the subs come with box building specs? What wiring will i need to wire the complete car, including for the headunit?

THis is all going into a 2005 Durango.

Thanks Alot, Mike

Theres definetly a better amp for that price plus it wont power all 3 subs good enough, unless you are planning on running 1 amp to each, then that is cool. Try ikesound.com They have some good amps that come with warranties. Try the Orions, my brother had one Orion 500.2 pushing two W3's, and they slammed. I have my Orion 1200D on the way. Definetly go with a Alpine HU if you find one you like in your price range. Top of the line. for that price you have no choice but to build your own box, its not as hard as you think, and they have a little walkthrough thing at crutchfieldadvisor.com. You can basically find the sub box specs for those subs anywhere, ported>sealed for SPL. Just get a 4 gauge wiring kit, that will come with all your necessary RCA cables and such. power, and ground. You can get a Scoche one at Wal Mart for 20 bucks, but the 20 ft. of power cable might not be long enough for that truck, i dont know. The only problem with that kit is that the ground wire is 8 ga. and you will want 4 ga. ground. You can prolly find a good kit on ebay too.

Hey man thanks alot, so you dont think that the 500/1 is a good choice? I really dont wanna skimp on a amp, cuz thats wut makes the subs sound either great, or like shit. I may not know much, but do kno that lol. I dont really know wut amps to really look at, if anyone happends to know an exact model or somthin, please let me know. Are Hifonics Brutus amps anygood, or the Volfenhag? I was lookin on WoofersETC.com, so i was just wondering about those. Im guessing i will build my box.

Anyone know of any good car audio places near detroit michigan? I am moving to the Auburn Hills area, near the Palace....anyone have any in mind?

Thanks alot, Mike -

Yeah, i heard about the 1.33 ohm load. And was also worried that it couldnt power all of those subs to their potential. I dont really want to buy a refurbished amp....is it worth it?

alright, i will take that into consideration. When they are refurbed wut all is replaced?are they used ones that have been blown, and fixed by the company? Any other ideas on what amp to run my 3 JL w3's 2 ohms each? Thanks, any ideas on a box for a 2005 durango?

Thanks guys, you can also IM me at flomoladiezlubme

your box should be very easy for an experienced builder to design. according to dei when an item is refurbished by them they basically replace all the soft parts inside the amp. all the resistors, transistors and all that jazz. as someone stated in a different post--a refurb could technically be as good or better than a new one because they must perform a slew of tests to confirm that a rebuild functions as brand new --whereas a brand new unit simply goes down the assembly line and has just a couple tests at the end of the line.

500/1 is not a good choice because if you wire al 3 in series/parallel you would show a 1.33 ohm load and i think the amp is only stable to 1.5 ohms. so basically you need an amp that is 1 ohm stable. also those 3 woofers should take 1000-1200w rms like a champ. one of these amps would be bad *** with those woofs.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5740075167&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
the older w3s are rated at 250 rms, so 750 rms altogether. you'll be sorry if you but 1200 watts continuously to those subs. i would go with a 800-900 rms amp.

oops my bad i thought they were 300 like the newer style and i know for a fact that the newer ones can take 400+ daily. mine did for over a year til i sold them but you can just turn the gains down a bit. plus you'll have extra power if you ever decide to upgrade.

Bcarpenter, are yours w3's? How do they sound in ur durango? I am getting a lease 05 durango, so im sure it is similar. What amp do you run, and would it be too much for my older style subs?

Mike

I'm guessing(or have overlooked) that these are the w3v1's then? so If the older v1's are rated at about 250w a peace you should look for and amp that puts out around 800 @ 1 ohm.

After about 10 min of looking i didnt find anything around 800w. I know the jbl bp 600.1 Is 1 ohm stable and will do 600w @ 1 ohm (prob a little more).

My friend has the same subs, and is using a Alpine Digital 600 or 700 watt amp, the new V Power one. Since im gonna be running 3 of them, shouldnt i have more amp than him? Tonite, i was looking at a car audio magazine, and i guy was running 2 500/1 JL amps, and 2 Jl 12W3V2's. Im pretty sure the guy at tweeters said these are D2's and RMS at 300, but i will make sure 2marrow when i go and pick them up, cuz he had to order them from a different store. Either way, i doubt i could beat $90each.
