2007 RE MX 15" Tinsel Leads Burning

Hey so my friend has had a RE MX on an IA 20.1 at 2ohms for a long time because he didnt have the electrical to drop it to .5ohms. Well recently he got a Kinetik 2400 and we dropped it to .5 ohms. Shit was slaamming but the wierd thing was that the gain was at near 0 and it was loud as fvck! Well it bumped for a reallly long time hard with no problems whatsoever.

Well one day he was playing White Girl and suddenly the sub started smoking. He turned it off immediately, we then went inside to let it cool then try it again to see if it was OK. Well as we returned and tried the sub it was no where NEAR as loud but seemed to be playing songs without and distortion. One day...no more workie. We take the sub out and inspect the coils as they are easily accessible on the new MXs. The coil looks just as it did the day he bought it. However the tinsels are woven and there is a black burn spot where the tinsels are on one side. Anyone know what happened/ what could have happened? Sub is sitting in his room now chillin. Sorry for the long story wanted to explain everything in full.

Trey

There is also no rubbing of the coil or anything else that i have been taught to check if a sub is blown. I am going to test the coils soon with a DMM which is the only thing i have not done.

Tinsel leads may have crossed causing a short.
Or they may have just burned up from too much current running through them. (i.e. clipping)
By crossed you mean the pos and neg tinsels touched? they are woven into the spider. But I have never heard of tinsels burning up but everything else on the sub being fine...is that something normal?

pics of damage?

could be a clipped signal to cause a weak spot in the lead to pop. with them still in the spiders it could be possible that they made contact and caused arching which would heat it up and burn. dunno just a thought.

i will get pics next time i go to his house have my old Treo SSX in his car now with the powerbass xa3000. If you look at the yellow spider on a regular picture of an MX...put an imaginary line where the tinsels are woven, in the middle on the way to the cone there is just a brownish/blackish burn spot.

it isnt from arching, you must have contact for arc to happenb as far as i know

Trey, he was clipping the signal weakening the tinsels @ 2 ohms.

when he dropped it down to .5 the signal going thru the tinsels was too strong for them in their damaged state, and burned them up.

Yup...happened to my BTL with the *new* tinsel leads. They just roasted from me clipping it. Coil looked brand new
at least you can still put some new tinsels on...these are woven:crap:

i talked with rusty on the phone for awhile and he said thats one problem people get when running low power

they turn up bass boost, gain, everything they can to get the most out of it.

yea i knew that his sub shouldnt have been as loud as it was off ~900rms....yea i can see what youre saying about him weakening them then just pushing em over the edge...just thought there might have been another problem...thanks robin

yea fa sho...i think the main problem is his head unit though...he has to turn his head unit to 30 out of 35 to even get his speakers to be somewhat loud so we can listen to music since his comps arent amped..think that had anything to do with it? thats all i could think since the gain was at nearly nothing

Good lord at least give a couple hundred watts to mids/highs before your throw a couple thousand into bass
