G-g-g-g-g-unity!
I'm cross-posting this on DIYmobileaudio.com. I have my full build thread going over there, but wanted to share some pics here, too. I'd like to start over here, but I'm so far into my build thread there that I can't possibly keep up. I'll just bump this thread when I have updates going.

Here's the link to my build thread:

2006 Civic LX Sedan Build Thread - Page 45 - Diy Mobile Audio - The Ultimate In Sound Quality.

Equipment:

Alpine iva-w505 w/h701 processing

Dynaudio mw162 midbass

Scanspeak d2904/6000 tweeter

Scanspeak 12m midrange (coming later)

(2) IDmax12 subs

Alpine pdx 4.100, 4.150, 1.1000

This weekend I had a couple guys up to help me with my install. Jonathan Denton (red shirt) is a newb into the competition scene and is definately making headway as he's placed first in about 2 of 4 competitions if I recall. Andy Jones (grey t-shirt with 'hybrid audio') is a world champion in SQ many times over. They both showed up Friday night.

Scott Selvidge (plain grey t-shirt) and Ricky McConnell (white adidas shirt) both showed up Saturday to help out and also work on Ricky's car. Scott did my a-pillars in some kind of world freaking record. I swear, that guy's work is amazing and fast.

Alright, first off here's a link to Jonathan's photobucket account. He linked some pics...

This is the most important one, though

Yep... 5am on Friday night. We didn't sleep at all.

And here's some pictures I took:

See how pretty the Scan 12m is???? I had to stare at this all weekend and drool knowing that I can't have it yet. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

Also note how the sub sits flush in the IB wall. Scott's a master.

I'd really like to thank Ant of Second Skin Audio for helping me out with all the sound deadener. I had ~ 118 sqft before this weekend and used every single bit. Mainly in the trunk. Also thanks for the Luxury Liner Pro. That stuff rocks!

My week's plan:

Today: run 16 gauge through molex for door speakers

Tomorrow: Lay luxury liner in trunk, lay back down carpet, and cut template for false floor

Wednesday: Cut false floor out, add bracing for top floor and carpet both

Thurs: Mount amps and start running wires

Friday: Cut template for backside of IB wall and carpet. Finish sealing it off against rear seat

Saturday: Finish doors. Hopefully be done after that.

Well, the goal is for a stealth install. Nothing flashy by any means. Just a very simple approach, but a lot of time into it, too.

here's a small update as I cross post on DIY, too.

Trunk liner put back in and wires routed through them. Also, behind the liner is a layer of Luxury Liner Pro.

Here's my problem; a 2" gap between the IB wall and the rear seat area. I'm considering putting foam in there, then scraping it off and covering it with black paint. Or just stuffing some LLP in there. Ideas?

Cardboard template for the side of the trunk. note the last 2 pictures are labeled "drivers side" and "passenger's side". The passenger's side is wider than the drivers side. Kinda weird. The spare tire well is literally shifted about 4" towards the driver's side. This means that 2 of the amps will be on the passenger side and the other one will go on the driver's side along with the h701. Probably putting the distro block at the top of it all, but that depends on where I ground everything. I'm having a tough time finding a new ground in the trunk.

an update...

I spent forever yesterday working on techflexing all wires and routing them. Only to get to the point of adding RCA's and realizing that every one of them is too short to route the way I want. So, until I get the right length ones in there I'm just going with the bird's nest install. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Subs are in and sound freaking great. They get low like I've never heard and they sound pretty dang flat across the board. They have no trouble getting loud if need be but I have to watch the HPF on them if I do that.

I've got a lot of work to still do, but I'm very happy with the sound right now with no tuning. I should be getting a 12m in this week and installed in the next few weeks. I'm just going to start doing what I can when I can rather than doing 48 hour marathons. I'm pretty burnt out as it is right now and just want to listen to some music.

The scan tweets are friggin phenomenal. They play so loud and still sound incredibly clear. I noticed things in some songs today that I've never noticed before. I couldn't help but bump some "circle in the sand" on my way to wal-mart. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I have them crossed at 3.6k with a 24db slope, receiving probably 150w (just a guess).

I'm hoping that my car will be done by the end of August. That's a while away but with all the things I need to do, it may take that long.

Scott, Andy, Jonathan, Mike: if you guys are reading this thanks for your help again yesterday.

Baffle is COMPLETELY sealed. There is a solid 2" gap there, but once I started feeling around the only actual hole was where the wires passed through. I sprayed foam in there (yes, foam, guys!) and it sealed it all up.

I let the system run full tilt with some Young Jeezy (low bass) and sat back there feeling around for any leaks and couldn't find anything. They sure don't play like there's a leak either.

A couple friends came over today to hang out while I put the trim pieces back in. One was asking about the setup and I explained IB setups to him and he didn't see how the trunk would act as a box (that's the easiest way for me to explain an IB install to someone who has no idea). I gave him the keys, told him to put the volume to 23 and listen. He didn't question it again.

They blend so well with the midbass that I'm floored. Truthfully didn't expect things to turn out this well. I'm very happy with the setup.

Anyway, those gaps are going to get filled in with something. I might cut out some 1" sheets of MDF or cut something out, carpet it black and stick it in there.

One other thing I'm pretty psyched on is NO RATTLES! I pegged the subs out, walked to the trunk outside of the car and listened for rattles. None. nada. I'll have to play with some test tones to make sure, but so far I've heard no rattles at all.

I'm going to put the RTA to this in a few weeks and I'll post results.

An update...

Got the 12m's in yesterday in excellent condition from BurntCircuits on DIY. They came packaged up like they were BNIB.

I was in a hurry as I was heading to Nashville to meet up with some friends for a b'day GTG. I basically just screwed these into place and used some crimps to wire them up so I could listen to them on the way. So, in other words, I did no deadening on the pillar or fill of any sort behind the driver. Nor did I completely seal the pod where the wires passed through. Having said that, these dang speakers are FANTASTIC! I love them! I didn't do any tuning, just set x-over points. I set the gain on the PDX 4.150 pretty high for these guys and they took every bit of it just fine. I had them SCREAMING on some songs and they played great.

So, now that everything's here I just got to do some aesthetic work in my car and I should be done with it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Here's some shots I took with my cellphone:

*Yes, they are firing down at the dash. However, I cannot tell any issues when playing.*

To be quite honest, I had the L3's there and they were angled so that they shot straight across the dash. Without a hint of tuning these crush the L3's (and it's not just because I want them to) in terms of tonality and imaging. At least in my opinion. Yes, I realize there is a size difference.

Seriously, the ONLY tuning I've done is T/A, and x-over while DRIVING on the interstate. No EQ work at all. When I hit the road yesterday I was amazed at how much easier it was to pick out instruments playing in certain corners. I listened to a few test tracks and everything spatially was much more 'centered'. Meaning that if there were 2 instruments playing and they were close together, they were pinpoint. No bleeding between the guys.

I think this really might have to do with the positioning of the speakers. I was reading through Matt Roberts' thread and really caught the portion about aiming his midranges straight toward the window to get the 1st reflections as close to the driver as he could. When Scott and I were talking about the aiming of the baffles in the pillars I remembered this so I decided that I should try the aiming out before rebulding the pillars. IMO, Matt's theory is dead on.

I'm sure the more knowledgeable guys that cruise this thread occasionally (you know who you are) might have more input on this. They may know something I don't. They may not agree with me when they hear it. All I know is that going to this driver seriously opened up my system. The difference is night and day. What's more amazing is that I've done nothing except for drop them in and some T/A work. That's it.

Really nice setup and review. What are your xover points set at? I'm loving the L1's by the way, thanks again. I just got my fronstage done with the L4's, L1's, and Peerless SLS's and I'm really curious to see how it compares to a setup like yours. I've never actually heard an SQ competition vehicle.
