$200-300 Set Up.

the subwoofers are 550 watts total @ 4 ohm (I believe), correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it need to power 550 watts @ 2 ohm, not 4 ohm?
- Those subs are only 275w rms each... so 600-ish watts @ 2 ohms is what you want for those as 2 together can only be wired at 2 ohms (Parallel) or 8 ohms (Series)...

Ok, I see. Thanks for the help.

Few more questions. Instead of getting that amp, which isn't too bad in price, but the $140 gives me not as much money to spend on a reliable HU. Do you think this would suffice with the dual JBL GT5-12's? Amazon.com: Dual XPA4640 600 Watt Amplifier: Electronics

Also, would an amplifier install kit, such as this: Amazon.com: Boss KIT-2 Complete 8 Gauge Amplifier Installation Kit: Car Electronics contain all of the necessary wiring for installation by myself?

Thanks, I'm just a bit confused when it comes to the whole installation part, and I plan on doing it all myself.

If I were you build it up, get 1 decent sub like C2 audio for $129 D4 and amp like apsm 1500 for $125 run it it on 2 ohms then later on get another sub and bass out!

1 c2 audio sub will most likley be louder than 2 of those JBL and then later on you will upgrade the jbl and the amp to get real bass and it wil be more expensive in the long run

Ok I kinda hate to chime in here but HU is the most important part of a system

Look for these specs

1. 4 volt pre out

2. Three sets of RCA jacks this should have a sub output

3. Try to find a HU that has as close to 100db signal to noise ratio as possible over 100 db is better

4. Now a days most most people listen to music with a MP3 player or a phone. So look for USB or 3.5m jack input

Even if it cost a lil bit more money you can't go wrong in getting a good head unit, a bad HU a bad sound do not by any off brands

Stick with pioneer, kenwood, aphine, jvc and so on. Do not think about dual, boss, or any brand that used to be good back in the day that is now made in china and now makes head units that all look the same.

These guys are pointing you in the right direction.Never buy Dual or Boss amps...lol.Very bad quality.I'd take their advice on the couple suggestions you've got.Good luck!

For what this OP is trying to accomplish 4v pre-outs are not even necessary, there are many descent affordable HUs out there with 2-2.5v pre outs that will work just fine for OP

This is a bit cheaper than the PPI ion, but it's used... - Infinity REF1600A 600 Watt Mono Car Subwoofer Amplifier 050667035013 | eBay - Good amp though

Do NOT buy ANY amp made by Dual... They are ALL J U N K - I would also stray away from Boss, go with an AT 4 gauge CCA amp kit - It's all you need and capable of more than what you are running and you can get one for

& I Honestly wouldn't go below a PPI Ion amp quality wise or you are asking for problems...
Yeah, I've heard that about both of those products. I may just have to go with the dual jbl's with the amp you suggested, running around $330 for the whole setup.

Now for the HU, all I need is an aux cord so I can play music via iPhone, and I've heard Pioneer's are decent for the price.

EDIT: For that last amp you posted, that seems perfect. It's right within my price range, and still reliable, even though being used.

Ah, I see. Thanks man. 2 of those JBL GT5's should do nice in that enclosure (I hope). Now I just need to select a correct amp, I've seen quite a few, but all of the very high quality ones are running a bit out of my budget. I can spend around $100 on an amp as well, any other suggestions?
Thanks.
have a kenwood 8105d amp for sale.... will do 100 shipped. does 500. 1 @ 2 ohm.

Sweet, I think I've finally come upon my new set up. Will purchase sometime this week (first sub purchase).

-Subwoofers - 2 jbl gt5-12's

-HU - Pioneer DEH-X65BT (Has what I need, aux cord so I can play music via iPhone)

-enclosure - Obcon 12" Dual Sub woofer Speaker Box Enclosure Labyrinth Slot Port MADE IN USA

- amp - Infinity REF1600A 600-Watt mono Car Subwoofer Amplifier

- wiring kit - Audio Technix 4 AWG GA Gauge Complete Fused Amp Amplifier Wire Wiring Kit | eBay

Not 100% finalized. But that's what I'm aiming for. Just to be clear, all of these parts should be compatible with a 1996 Honda Accord?

The 4volt pre out must be a me thing. but I don't like going under 4volts. I do remember back in the day when most radios where .5 volt pre outs. Snr was 75 -85 db for a good deck. Thank god tho's days are past. I haven't lowballed a system in 20 years

I was just trying to give this guy some good advise and I'll stick to what I said. I just told him the minimum that I would would look for in a HU if I was buying for myself. Can pick ups some good deals on ebay

All of that will work for you, not too bad at all for the prices, and you can always upgrade those subs & amp down the road and re-use that box on a set of Pioneer Champ Pro 12s - They sound good in those enclosures //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Now it looks like you have a decent setup going, the only problem I see is the amp is used. Personally I hate buying used electronics. I would hate to see you get burned with that tight of a budget. You can get a new AUDIOPIPE APSM1300 1000watt amp for $105 at 3kingsaudio.

I'd buy a used Infinity any day over a new AP anything... The Infinity is CEA2006 compliant, and guaranteed by the seller to not be DOA - That AP is only good for about a few hundred good non-clipped watts

When you are on a very tight budget, USED is the way to go so you can get quality stuff at an affordable price... If you shop smart & carefully you will be fine, I buy / sell / trade used electronics all the time
