As someone else said, theoretically 3db louder. You do avoid any chance of phasing and cancelation issues with a single, but normally that's not a big deal unless you're running big multiples of subs.

The largest benefit I see is assuming the same power, you are stressing each woofer a lot less by using a pair.

 
the general rule is double the cone area and get 3db, double the power get 3db, so if you add another sub of the same power, then power them both(double power) you would get 6db gain. Not always the case though as it gets exponentially harder
Holding all else equal: double the cone = 6dB

but two subs only has a 3dB gain in SPL because you're doubling everything including the moving mass. But they can also handle twice the power so you can get +6dB out of them if you add another amp.

I think we all know what he meant since that's how I see most, if not all, people say it. No one thinks "yeah, but did you double the mms as well?!?"
