2 or 3 Component System

I've got a Scion FR-S and desperately need to change the audio. Did I mention I'm a complete newbie? Except I know not to go to Best Buy.

The Scion has 6.5's in the lower doors, a 4 and a 1.5, both on the dash. Then it's got 4's in the back behind the b-pillar and I've heard to ditch those too.

Anyway, I've gotten advice to get 3 components since I have stock room. Also I've gotten advice to drop the 4's and go 2 way, then giving me mumbo jumbo I didn't understand.

2-2.5k

What do you guys think?

Assuming your goal is Sound Quality... here are my personal recommendations:

Pioneer 80PRS Headunit

Helix DSP

Scanspeak Classic 6.5" Crossed at 80//1khz

If you can fit them the Tang Band W4 Bamboo 4" Midrange crossed at 1khz//3khz (they can be crossed lower if you want as well)

Almost any soft dome tweeter that fits in your location should blend well

Keep the rear stock and fade them so you bring the front stage forward.

I'm assuming the 2-2.5k is a budget possibly?

I don't think you need to spend nearly that much to get great sound.

Probably the most important piece to the equation is properly treating your doors ~ deadening, foam, sealing all gaps, etc.

What else will you upgrade? Don't go to fewer speakers if the factory radio and amplifier will stay. That factory 3-way configuration makes me envious as it has a number of advantages.

...mumbo jumbo. Haha. I was referring to sound acoustics. Things that have to be right to make your car sound good. You can have $2000 in equipment and it will still sound bad if you dont understand the acoustics behind tuning and the advantages of 2 vs 3 way or vice versa. You have stock 3 way. Thats great but you have to add another amp for a 3 way system as well as have a headunit capable of running that many speakers. Guess what. There is only one and its $1200. You can get a headunit thats $240 that will run a 2 way system very well or you can get a external DSP and run a 3 way.

3 way will be more expensive. Harder to install. Need an external dsp, another amp and is another beast to tune.

2 way is cheaper and easier in every way.

Why do you say use helix over something like a minidsp? Just cause he can afford it?

As for crossovers. Acoustic response defines that. Random X/O are just that, random when using an external dsp.

Better software. Mini has came a long way but it's still not quite as good.

Of course the crossover points were just guidelines... I was mainly pointing out how low/high the drivers like to play.

Gotcha. I havnt used the helix, though I think the minidsp has more power because it has FIR abilities or something of the sort. People over on diyma came up with some ways to use the biquads to make linear phase changes or whatever it is that FIR does

To be honest I haven't fussed with the mini much. I have a mini 2x4 and I'll mess with it once my drivers for the truck come in.

Just going with silver flutes and Vifa tweets in a 2 way.

Won't be as good as the car but should exceed the stock 2 way the truck has now.

The c-dsp is awesome. Silverflutes and Vifa is a veryy good combination. Youll be happy

So he lives pretty close to me and im trying to come up with a solid parts list.

He wants a headunit with android auto integration. That means a double din. This is an area I dont know much about. He was looking at the pioneer nex 4100. It has time alignment and crossovers but the crossover are utterly useless. Comically so. Look at the manual and youll see what I mean.

So that means he's going to have to get an external dsp. I say rock the c-dsp. Ive had zero issues with it and its affordable.

He wants to go 3 way as his dash has the room and is already integrated.

Im recommending the tm65 midbass drivers, the scanspeak 10f 4in, and whatever tweeter he wants.

As for amps. I was thinking from the SSA store. Like a twisted sound 150.4(no reviews though :/) or the like for midbass/range and maybe something like a sundown 50.4 or US acoustic lisa or wendy for a small 2 channel.

His mono would prob be from ssa as well though I havnt looked. He wants to go with a custom fiberglass .75cu enclosure from a certain site. Looks solid but $375 :/ though its a good fit. I say drop a Sd-3 in it and power it by 700rms.

Im looking for any advice here on other options as well as the headunit situation. I honestly dont think he'd have any problem with a 2 way active set up SQ wise but he'd have to go with a 80prs for that route and hes deadset on android auto compatibility. Kinda puts a big hangup on things.
