2 ohm vs. 4 ohm and Infinity

I need to do my rear stage. This is a family car (Subaru Forester) with my kids or friends sitting in the rear seats.
I can appreciate the need for a family car. The folks in the back seat will be situated only ~2' farther from the front speakers than the driver. That's not enough of a distance to warrant another set of speakers that'll only hurt the sound quality. They'll be able to hear the fronts just as well as you.

Having rear speakers will hurt the sound quality? How is this?

There are times that I listen to different music than my kids as well. With my HU I can dual zone.

Given the second comment, the first is irrelevant. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hope you have fun with the system.

OK, I have done a lot of reading about rear speakers in last couple of days. I think I understand the negatives of full range speakers running at same power as fronts. I have always been a fan of rear fill but I do not want to overpower the fronts. I do not want to use 2 of my amps channels powering speakers that I will probably have faded down most the time. I use the dual zone so infrequently.

These are the two options I'm considering:

1. Running the stock rear speakers off the HU, running Alpine Type R component speakers (SPR-17S) in front off of 4 channel amp, and running a 8" 2 ohm Kicker sub (TCVT82) off of the remaining amp channels (bridged). This sub/enclosure will be under passenger seat.

2. Replacing the stock rear speakers with midbass drivers (probably MB Quart PVI 164) and run them off of 4 channel amp. Running Alpine Type R component speakers (SPR-17S) in front off of 4 channel amp. Get sub and another amp (mono) at later date.

Any thought on which I should with? My concern is that if I replaced the rear speakers with midbass drivers I would still be pulling sound stage to rear and that I would end up fading them a lot.

Thanks

I think that the reason the Infinity speakers sound harsh in the highs is the fact that there is no crossover for the woofer itself as it connects directly to the input wiring for the tweeter crossover. At least that's the case on my Infinity Kappa 62.7i speakers. That means there's nothing to prevent the frequencies above the tweeters crossover frequency from getting to the woofer. The way to fix that is use the same values of inductor and capacitor and replicate the crossover for the tweeter except the cap will be in parallel with the woofer's VC and the choke will be in series with the cap and VC. You will then have a true 12dB / Octave Linkwitz Riley Crossover which should make the infinity speakers sound better. I plan on trying that with mine.
