2 Head units 1 Vehicle

OK I have looked around the internet searched forums and have not found a suitable answer to my challenge! I have a 2000 Chevy suburban with stock head unit (acdelco) am\FM\CD. It also has OnStar. I used to have a DVD player and monitor that was stolen the insurance company replaced the units and I got to choose what I wanted so I got a sound stream am\FM\DVD\BT\Nav …all the good stuff ….anyways...i was trying to figure out a way to connect both of the units to the speaker system. Using the sound stream primarily and when the kids want to watch a DVD and I do not want to hear it I can switch to the stocker and use it??? Any thoughts?? Can I use toggle switches to select the source using the speakers? What impedance issues would I have? Thanks for any input you may have !!!

most newer decks are dual zone ...meaning the DVD will play in the rear and you can listen to something else up front from the same deck....the kids can put on a pair of wireless headphones and your set to go...your dvd/cd internal deck is used up....I'll usually listen to Sirius or IPOD when going this route...if you want to listen to a cd...then you can ad a cd changer .....or just put a basic DVD deck standalone on the rear screens leaving you full access to the main deck...last but not least you want to do what you first asked...still again your deck will have to be dual zone...kids using afternarket deck...you want to listeb to factory CD add an FM modulater to your factory deck...your sound will work through a preset fm freq on the aftermarket deck...also this can be done on the aftermarket deck by adding the fm modulator to it...it will work through a preset on your factory deck...the fm modulator can be bought as automatic units or toggled units...I'd get the toggled unit for what you want and a good grade modulator....yjr advantage to putting the modulator on the aftermarket deck is not much wiring to add it in...disadvantages to modulators is freq bandwidth is good only to the fm freq range much less than cd or dvd....

i agree using one dual-zone head unit would be your best bet.

otherwise, you could install both, and just use 5-pin relays to decide what speakers are powered from which head unit. you could easily group them front and rear, one 5-pin relay per speaker, with toggle switches controlling the relay
