14v battery?

I am in the process of building up my 1990 corvette. Putting in sound deadening, nice stereo system, new engine, suspension, lowering, painting, tinting the windows, ect....

I was curious if there is a way to make a 14v car battery. I could drop the voltage a bit for the ECU, rewind the alternator if need be for the slightly higher voltage, ect...

I remember 10 years ago back when i was into car audio that there were regulated and unregulated power supplies and regulations against reving your engine for more voltage and current when burping.

It also seems like my lights would be a little brighter. It just gives me a little more head room.

I have thought about taking two 6v lead acid batterys and wiring them in series to get 12v so I can have a little more flexability in battery placement. It will really help when I go to install two turbos. Then I thought about 3 of them and getting 18 volts.

While an alternator charges at about 13.5v and car electrical equipment is built to handle a 20% + or - increase/decrease in voltage, 18v would be just too much.

I am also curious if you could take like 4 12v batterys, put them in series to run custom built amps at about 48 volts, but also wire the batterys in parallel to get 12v with 4 times the current to run the care like normal.

The advantage of 48 volts vs 12 is that you would need 4x less current which means you can use much smaller wire.

Any thoughts?

You can make custom banks to make a 14v battery. Kinetik used to make them, but I hear that they don't make them anymore. It would be a 7 cell battery instead of a 6 cell (12v) or 8 cell (16v) battery. Your charge rate would need to be 16.8v for a 7 cell setup.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I have been told that you cannot both series and parallel connect 4 batteries at a given time. You can parallel multiple groups of serially connected batteries. I am not sure if you meant literally series and parallel at the same time or not. I am pretty sure you would need some type of diodes or relays to make that work.

He is right it is not possible to run the same bank of batteries in series and parallel. if you would try this no matter where you connect to the voltage would be the combined voltage of running them in series. I dont know of any way to hook up any analog electronic parts (ex. diodes) to make this work. even if you could you would be hard pressed to find parts that can take the voltage and the current draw because very few places use 48v DC with any high amount of current.

Wow I got lost reading that, trying to find my way back...

You know a little bit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Thanks for all the info guys. I asked the same question on a forum where everyone designs and builds circuits and found out that if I were to try that, I would get exploding batterys //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I am impressed you guys were able to help me. Reading these forums I sometimes get the idea that im just seeing a lot of 16 year olds who just want the bass and dont' care how an gheto an install looks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thinking about it I suppose the correct words to use for searching in google would be "2v lead acid". I had tried a few other terms and came up with nada.
