The x is no SQ.... the XXX is sql.... the x is mostly all lows.... freq. response is not there like the xxx..... way better choices but outta what you named id go xxx 06 or older....
Technically you guys are both right... SPL subs are technically effecient. That's what the commonly used "SPL formula" is really measuring. BL measures motor force, MMS is how much mass that amount of force has to move. Higher BL/MMS ratio means more force/amount of weight, so effeciency.
The issue with this high "effeciency" is twofold.. First, often these heavy coils cause a very high inductance and quite a bit of inductance modulation. This makes the woofer very ineffecient at high frequencies and up into the midbass as the woofer is receiving quite a bit less power than the amp should be putting out, due to increased resistance.
The second issue is since SPL competitors LOVE to shove 15kw amps onto their subs (as cone movement is reduced singificantly near tuning) for the retards who plan on also playing music through the woofer, they need to be able to not bottom out and destroy themselves. They use very stiff suspensions as a result. That along with the higher FS due to the BL/MMS causes reduced low frequency extension..
A good SQ woofer has none of this. Sometimes, it can have moderately high BL/MMS, but for SQ you generally run a smaller box to dampen that out anyways. Suspensions are nice and loose, the woofer CAN be easily overdriven if your not careful and inductance modulation is kept to a minimum. Does this make it effecient, not really, but YES in a way. It makes the woofer ineffecient, but with a much wider bandwidth and more effecient down real low and up high. On music, this often sounds better and seems to sound louder with less power.
It really comes down to specifically what you mean by effeciency. Many good SQ woofers in a bigger box can do great on low power and give good output over a huge range. However, they will not outdo a SPL woofer at 45hz on a watt/watt basis, not even close. at 25hz, and 80hz, they often can //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif So really as always it's a bandwidth vs effeciency issue. But for daily, high bandwidth certainly seems to be the more effecient of the two on real music. So are SPL woofer effeicent, absolutely as long as your burping. On music with a wide range of notes, a SQ oriented woofer is your best bet for musical output with low wattage.

What better options do you suggest for a $500 budget maybe a little more including shipping. Most places that ship heavy things like a subwoofer to Hawaii shipping might be in the $100 price range. Also if I did get the xxx it would be the 2013 model.
I seen 2 xcons in the classifieds how would they compare?
What kind of music do you plan on playing. It's really comes down to what kind of music you'll be playing to figure out what's going to be "louder" or sound better in your scenario.

Okay. Pretty much down to xxx12 or dd 9512 now... everywhere I go to online shipping makes the sub cost almost $200 more per sub. Anybody has experience with these 2 subs? The xxx is the new version the dd9512 is 2 years old.
Unless there are other recommendations. I have a 96 civic hatchback also.

The x is way to muddy to be considered sq anything. In that case between those two subs the xxx wins. Now if I am going to look for actual sql subs I am starting with the tc axis, IA Flatlyne, Fi Q, AA HAvoc, and probably the SSa Xcon/Icon would make the cut. Everyone of these subs is a better all around sub then either of the op subs unless you care about beefy looking cosmetics more than sound reproduction. This is all my opinion but I have owned 5 of the mentioned subs in this post including both you are looking at so believe my opinion atleast holds water on the topic.

Would you pay 50% more for each of those subs? Tries getting other subs but due to shipping the cost goes up at least 50% more.not too many choices besides jl kicker Rockford etc here in Hawaii. There are dd dealers n sundown n re.

DD even though super beastly... are super expensive.... your best bet is probably to buy used off here.... the ssa subs are not as much as the xxx or the x series... and perform well... buy off here and you save money even with shipping.... my buddy homegrown got some minty new ssa subs for sale on here...

Was gonna buy the ssa xcons from him but shipping was almost $300. Would come out to about the same as new even from their website shipping was almost $300. Seen a few used dds here on Craigslist also a brand new xxx for $500. That's why I put those as options.
Was gonna see if homegrown could ship to my brother in Seattle for his asking price and have my bro ship em here from Seattle which would probably of been cheaper but I seen that he sold them already.

The DeathRow would be the SQL sub
Would love to agree but the death row has a high le which I am not a fan of. The flatlyne after broke in is one of the best subs on the market.
