12 xxx vs sundown x12?

I've heard good things about both subs in terms of sq. but for volume, the re has 54mm xmax vs the sundowns 30mm(the re is the highest excursion subwoofer ever made), so it has a higher air displacement. I can't compare sq because I've never heard those subs in person, but the re will be louder. just relaying specs and such here b/c I've never actually owned either.

The X is basically a Zv3 with different soft parts and I've run the Zv3 in my daily SQL and they did great. As for SQ, when you're talking about running a few thousand or more watts to any subwoofer, the box and the environment it is in are infinitely more important than TS numbers because everything around the subs is going to move. And consequently, everything that moves has the potential to destroy any sound quality potential of the sub.

Those are spl oriented subs.
No

agreed. if sq is first and spl second, find different subs.
And also no.

These two subs were definitely not meant as SPL only subs. Fs, Mms and BL^2/Re is a good place to start looking as to why. If I were to select these drivers, it would be because I wanted a monster low frequency daily driver.

To answer the OP's question, it depends. What kind of room do you have to work with? What kind of power do you have on tap? Are you going ported, sealed, etc.? Is weight an issue? What's your budget?

Adore brahma/tumult, SSA xcon, arc audio flatline, fi sp4, Tc sounds axis/3hp, IA death row, soundsplinter rl-p, 05 xxx or pretty much any large underhung subs that have soft a soft suspension.

yea wut 'bout 'em? high mms? low fs? did i just miss something?
If you know your woofers than you woudn't even need to ask that question. I assume since he wants a SQL woofer that the best option is mainly what are considered low end monster subs. In that case you look for throw, motor force (magnet diameter), softer suspensions, low fs and mmd(hopefully), the more linear the better for sq purpose so LMS technology is always something good to look at. I mean it doesn't take a car audio whiz to know these things.

I just thought that if a sub has more throw you can displace more air and get more db? I don't know my woofers-that's why I didn't understand the post. The only ones I recognized off the top of my head was IA death row and 05 xxx. noob here;)

I understand fs(21 hz is to low for spl oriented?) but how would mms determine whether a sub is spl oriented? bl^2 is a motor type that re discontinued on the xxx in '05. here's the t/s parameters for the v2- woofers
Unfortunately I am not going to spend any decent amount of time answering these questions, but just know what I said is true. If you truly care enough to know why, you will do some research and will eventually be able to answer your own question.
