Sensitivity doesn't mean much with subwoofers. Especially the low low bass.I would say the power ratings do not necessarily automatically translate into loudness or sound quality. It depends on subwoofer's sensitivity. For example, 12 inch subwoofers can have sensitivities in the range from 84 to 90dB and beyond, 1watt/1meter I think. Assuming they work within they're usable power/excursion capabilities, the 90dB sensitivity sub could get just as loud as the one with 84dB sensitivity with 4 times less power.
By the way, is your budget for two subwoofers or per piece? I would say, $100-200 is enough for just _one_ decent subwoofer unless you buy used or on sale. Of course, there are some ok subwoofers that cost below $100 a piece, but they usually have some kind of limitation. If your goal is to get loud, get one decent subwoofer and put it into a well designed ported box (this can require twice as much space as 2 12 inch in sealed boxes).
Overall, looking at your budget, and also your power available, I would have picked a single subwoofer for myself. But if you insist on having two, take a look at Infinity Reference subwoofers. They're very cheap, with decent sound quality and sensitivity.
I got a stock factory HU. As for the amp wiring kit, whichis pretty decent at a bang for my buck kind of deal. Would a 4gauge be more then enough or an 8 gauge is fine?op - you didn't give much info to work with. I guess you have a aftermarket hu? if you don't have a amp yet I'd look for a 4 channel that can be bridged to around 450 watts, this will allow you to amp the front stage also. I recommend a DCON 12 S4 to go with that type of amp.
Build a ported box, and don't forget a wiring kit. Should be at about your budget.
He's suggesting selling you the DD1512 which I would take over the DCON if the price is right also he builds boxes bro. His box is probably better than any you'll pay $200+ for, I say probably because I've never used them but I hear good things.Wouldnt a customized box for a 12" dcon be much better then a prefabricated one?
The DCON is a way better subwoofer price/performance wise as are almost all of the options listed heh JL's don't start sounding real good until you hit the w6's anything before that is basically overpriced. Never been a real big JL fan if you can tell. Are you looking for something that's well made and just pounds or is there a certain sound you are after? As stated earlier in the thread the type and size of the box will make a big difference as well. If your after a very clean musical sub at good price I'd recommend a JL Audio 12w1V2 that can be bought for around $100. It's one of their lower end subs but in the right box I think they sound better then many of the subs out there. Also a very versatile sub. I have 2 of the 10s and they are very accurate with jazz and upright bass and yet will also pound with rap or dubstep.
How much for the sub? Hows the condition?about how much for a custom 12" sub box with carpet coverJust for an idea I have DD1512 D2 sitting here I do not need anymore. I also have a couple enclosures sitting around that I could sell with if you're interested.
