12" RE SE sealed?

running it sealed pissed me off because it gets so loud and low ported. It literally seems like 2 different kind/class of woofer when you go from sealed to ported. It will absolutely murder the lows ported, but sealed the sub is so ordinary.

The SE is a weird dude in a lot of respects. It is an "SQ" sub but yet to really get out of it what it is capable of, it really needs to be ported. My brother has one in just shy of 2 cubes tuned to 32hz and it really shines in this environment, yet in sealed they really lack the low end punch they have ported. I have ran my IDQ ported and sealed and yes it is louder ported, but nothing like the SE. The SE really is a low end monster, and by running it sealed you are robbing yourself of that. MY IDQ has a much more flat response whether ported or sealed...whereas the SE doesn't have a great ability to play higher like the IDQ, so by sealing it you are going to hear a lot of 50hz...

Would there be a better match for under the back seat of a quad cab dodge ram? I only have 1.8 to work with here. Assuming I'm going with sealed, and I can't be deeper than 7" on the magnet, would the RE SE's be the best match for the budget...

And you verified this by trying multiple alignment sealed boxes, not just making a blanket statement based off of nothing more than one attempt using factory recommended enclosure specs at best, right?

What do you think audioholic

Yes. There really shouldn't be any mixed reviews at all, actually. It's most likely due to the fact that going ported yields much more output. Otherwise, as a sealed performer they hold their own abosolutely fine.
Come on now. It should not get this complicated, people. This is why people tend to see 'mixed reviews.' That statement above should /thread. Period.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I dont normally like to recommend specific brands, just give info. Too much comes down to personal taste. I like people to listen for themselves, or at least do the research enough themselves to be able to make an educated choice based on what they like. With that said, Id go with Funkypups all the way.

But seriously, sealed is pretty simple. Displacement in terms of cone area X excursion will dictate output. So the larger the cone available, the more output. Or the more excursion possible, xmax, the more output possible. For sealed systems where output is a concern, I generally recommend the biggest driver with the most xmax possible. Dont get too hung up on the numbers though, do some research, get a short list of candidates, and find some reviews of those specific drivers to help you decide which will suit your needs best.

did I use multiple sealed alignments? no. But if I get the sound I'm looking for from a ported box off first try then why would I waste time making numerous sealed ones? I could see if it were my job, but tis not

You missed the point. The point was you are comparing 'sealed' to 'ported' and giving conclusions, when in reality you are only giving your opinion based on 2 boxes. For all we know you built the thing with some skewed alignment for the sealed. I said 'factory recommendation' in my previous reply because some people like to fall back on "I used the recommended enclosure size" rather than actually researching what they truly made (in terms of alignment) as if the factory never gives bad advice or even just advice that your personal taste disagrees with. Factory recommendations are just that, a recommendation, not gospel.
You compared the sub 'sealed' versus 'ported' and described the differences in terms of output and frequency response. Obviously the ported will have an output advantage, no contest. But for frequency response, that is just as much determined by the sealed system's Q as it is by the vented system's tuning frequency. Again for all we know, your ported system had very exaggerated bass in the mid to upper 40hz region, which many people consider 'extending very deep' when in reality it is not. Sealed systems should inherently have deeper extension than their average ported counterpart.
