12" Kicker CVX different box or upgrade sub

First post here (been reading a lot) and apparently I don't know as much about car audio as I thought I did. Anyway, I recently picked up a MTX 1000xd, 12" Kicker CVX, 2.0f capacitor, and all the wiring off craigslist for $150. Good deal?

The sub is in a small ported box. Probably 1 cubic ft without the port and the port is maybe 2" wide 12" long. It seems to hit the higher frequencies good but won't hit lows worth a ****. Is it the sub or the box? I'm guessing the box might have quite a bit to do with it but I'm not sure. Anyway, is it worth trying to build a better box or should I look into upgrading to say a Sundown SA 15 or something else? I wouldn't mind something a little louder but I don't want to drop the coin on a new sub if I could get more out of this one with a different box. If you think I'm pretty much at this subs limit though I'll upgrade. I listen to just about everything, rap, country, rock, mostly rap though. And I have it in a Jeep Cherokee XJ.

If I end up upgrading I have about a $300 budget for the sub. My amp supposedly puts out 1000w rms so I'd like to get a sub that will work in that range because I want to keep the amp. I could build the box but I wouldn't even know where to start with dimensions, port tuning, port length for this sub or if I get a different one. Never got in this far with my systems before. Always had pre fab boxes with junk subs. So I'm open to suggestions. Thanks

Hey man I to have a jeep Xj I love it what yesrnisyours mines a 99 would love to see some pics..... Anyways I would suggest going with a sound qubed hds 312 in a custom ported box built by someone on this forum like cncstang. the sub is 160 on the sound qubed website Also what kind of amp do you have ? Just cause your amp days it puts out 1000 watts doesn't mean it's true...... The sub takes 1200rms but are a little underrated I believe, here's the link to the sub

SoundQubed HDS312

I was just looking at those subs. Are they better then Sundown? I really don't want to buy a different sub but if I can't pull much more out of this CVX I think I'm gonna. Ill probably like a 15 better because I like the lows. Just that this CVX don't want to hit them. Could be box though.

My Jeep is a 2000. 4.5" lift on 31's. I'll see if I could post a pic. Haven't done the forum thing in a long time. Gotta see if I remember how to do it...lol

Edit: amp is a MTX 1000xd. Says it does 1000rms at 2ohms and I think I read somewhere it actually puts out around 1100.

I had two of those in a 3.5 cubic foot box ported with an external port in my 240sx at 600w rms and they were very loud and very responsive down low. My suggestion would be to buy/build a new ported box with a lot more volume (you will need it anyway if you upgrade). See if you like the response. If not, just get a different sub in your newly built large box and then you will be happy.

Larger subs to play lower is a myth. I build tline enclosures for single SA V3 8's that hit down into the mid 20's no problem. And they are very loud with a grip of bandwidth.

kicker subs = junk

prefab box = junk

cap = junk

and i bet the cable kit is junk also.

soundqbed subs are very nice.

so are the sa subs.

but for 300 i would do a sq sub. and make a box for that sub.

***** the cap. if you need get another battery for the back.

So you think I should try building a box for this sub? Would it be worth it or do you think I'd just be wasting my time?

Cables seem ok. I read where any aluminum in cable is bad and I didn't see any. Very soft too, not real thick strands. I'm no expert though so maybe it is crap. But seems ok to me.

If I do the big 3 and upgrade my alternator do you think I would still need a 2nd battery for 1000w?

Thanks for the responses. Really appreciate it since I'm pretty new to all this.
