1000 watt amp (550@4)-(1000@2), 2 ohm sub can i just leave it at 2

You can run one coil, but power handling will be lower -- not 1/2 as many will claim -- more like 3/4.
You can also short the open coil, but that has a big effect on t/s parameters, basically making it a different sub (I can't recall the specifics).
 
I have a new kicker cxa1200.1 amp and the new mono kicker amps advertise themselves to be 1 ohm stable. But the owners manual says it will still only put out the same 1200 watts rms at one ohm as it does for two ohm. But only 600 watts rms at 4 ohm.
