$1000 budget for head unit

My buddy at work does a lot of off road vehicle sports. He is building a Pre-Runner out of a ford bronco to be, well to be the pre runner for his off road buggy.

Now he has given himself a budget for a 1000 dollars to buy a good unit that won't skip under extreme conditions.

I may have him look into the option of ipod ready unit, and secure the ipod from becoming a missle hazard.

What are some other suggestions, or what can be done in this situation.

a thousdand dollars for a deck thats going into a car that will be making 8 foot drops??? why they hell would you spend that kind of money on a HU for a truck like that...

Pioneer P6900ub or Kenwood with usb. A flash drive wont skip and they can hold a ton of music. MP3 disks can skip.

best bet is to get a flash capable mp3 player. You want to avoid anything that has moving parts, IE: Harddrive mp3 players (30gb+ ipods, etc, mp3 cds, cds, tapes, 8 tracks, vinyl recorders, etc).

Go with a simple deck that has an input of some sort (ipbus, ipod, plain-jane 3.5mm) that you can simply plug the flash player into.

I think that you could set a much lower budget.

It will have to have solid state storage. IE flash drive or whatever. No discs, no hard drives etc... Ipods will work but like you said, how are you going to secure it.

IDA-X001... Has no disc player to skip.. designed specifically for iPod use.. $400.. Use the rest of the budget for the rest of the system.

The JVC KD-NX5000 has a hard drive... ie spinning disks... and the #1 way to kill a hd is physical shock, ie dropping it.. so that is a no go...

most ipods are hard drive's too...

and how is he going to secure a sub box, and keep the magnets on the sub motor from coming unseated if he's going to be falling 8' all the time?

Uh I never said anything about a sub. No sub.

I'm just looking for Head unit ideas that will take the abuse. This vehicle will be street legal and he wants a head unit that will also play CD's for street use and something to use during a 400 mile off road course that will with stand the "occasional bump" abuse of off road courses.
