1 HDC vs 2 HDS

well if u use the distortion meter, it just means u know when your HU and or line driver is sending a clipped signal. That just means you can get alot more clean power out of your amp.

This thread hurts to read. Cone area isn't everything. The HDC3 not only has more motor force and xmax, but will probably have similar thermal limits to a pair of the 12s too. I would personally go with the HDC3 - it's just an all around better woofer.

Sure buddy, i bet you have tried both setups, Tl'd them and clamped how much power it took to blow both setups.

My grand plan is to end up with 2 HDC312's an 2 Q2200's, but my moneys slowed way down an im back n skool. I wish id have dun this research 6mnths back, the money i spent on wat i have would'v went waay farther. Im probly gunna use my FA wenever that gets in hand for 2HDS an 1 Q2200. Or if i get work'n sooner then later il jump on 2 HDC's of course. No room for 15's only have 5cu's an i have 1 15 n 4cu rite now.

Actually i have lol, been doing this since 06. Hmmm. let me recall, 2 12 sdc 2.5's, 2 12' hdc3's, 2 15 sdc 2.5's, 2 15 hdc3's, 4 18 hdc3's, and now ive got 8 hds210's which if it sounds good will be 8 hdc3 10's. I know what each sub will take and pretty much what numbers they will do. takes about 2500 clamped to bottom out an hdc3 on music and about 1500 to heat the coils up if u demo it a long time daily, sdc's will take 1500 mechanically just fine but the coils can handle about 900 if you let them cool down between songs, hdc3's are louder if you are running over 800 rms per sub but thats a 2.5 inch coil on the sdc, the new hds3's have a 3" coil so i imagine the hdc3 will only walk away on over rated power, which he wont have. from my experience the smaller subs will take more abuse than the single hdc3 on that power. plus itll be maxed out the whole time and possibly rip the spiders on very low songs on that power. ive had the coil come undone on only 1600rms clipped on an hdc3.

in 5 cubes you could do 4 10's if you can fit the port area, way louder than 2 12's and could take much more power.

If you actually knew anything, you would realize that a lot of that is dependent on the enclosure.

Again this is wher money plays its role, more subs more wiring more money. The way i see it the HDS's will give me more options later because i cud get 2 HDC's. 1 HDC15 cost the same as 2HDS12's, an now we full circle. I guess the only way is a Side by Side comp huu?

All of those were in reccomended enclosures. Except the 18's they were short on port area. The box will effect mechanical limits of the sub, but not what the coils can handle on clamped power. So what your saying is you give sub reccomendations based off specs, then when someone comes in with real experience, you say the box makes the difference to cover your ****** opionion. You sound like a real winner.

Yep. Thats all this hobby is, buy and try. Good luck on what ever you go with, its gonna be loud.

Well now that you guys have me digging deeper, i dont see motor force but i do see the diff in magnet sizes. The HDS's have 145oz mags an the HDC's hav 340oz mags more than twice the weight. How important is that? I figure lighter mags use less power which, im guessing could make the sub more musical? All the Comp Subs i see have massive mags which need gobs of power jus to get going an in turn couldnt be efficient for music....am i a freak'n genius or wat?

False. More excursion = higher thermal limits because the coil is being cooled more.

Magnet weight alone doesn't mean much, but it generally means that the sub will have more motor force. A larger motor can often help disperse heat from the coil better sometimes. Motor force is most closely related to BL - but make sure to compare subs with the same impedance. Having a large motor doesn't mean that a sub can't be musical.

Well I'd want to run at .5 so I cud get at least 2500w from the Q2200d. Therefore i technically cant compare, the 1 15 would have to be 1ohm an the 2 12's would be 2ohm, to achieve. 5 impedance rite?
