I just got an 04 monte carlo and on crutchfield it says the hu i want will fit but i need a $80 piece to make the door chime still work and to provide a switched 12v source. It says this piece will not work if your car has onstar and mine does. And it says voice prompts will not work with an aftermarket hu which doesnt bother me because i don't use onstar anyway but i was wondering if the hu will even work without the piece?

You can use the $80 piece if you don't want to keep Onstar. If you don't use the adapter, you'll need a standard wire harness and you'll need to find a new source for switched 12v. You'll lose all audible warning chimes. If there's any chance you'll leave your lights on, it's worth buying the adapter.

even if you leave the lights on its no big deal, they will shut off automatically before the battery dies, great car by the way.
