I'd just rewire all the speakers, but if you want to just rewire the suspect speaker, you can try that.

Simple answer is to bypass the OEM wiring. I wonder if the OEM stereo used a chassis ground for the speakers and that's causing you grief.

I think that's highly unlikely. OEM speakers haven't been grounded since the 70's.
