I was looking for an oldschool head unit like the pioneer dex-p99rs that was top of the line, like the pioneer but plays the flac files at the highest level of fidelity like the pioneer dexp99rs. Not sure why the pioneer dex-p99rs didn,t play flac files being as high end as it is. I half to have something at least as high end in sound quality as the pioneer dex-p99rs. Was there anything at that sound quality level that played flac files. thanks

No.

The reason it's considered the benchmark is that it's strictly a pre-amp —no extra electronics, all audiophile-grade caps, parts, board design, copper-plated chassis, quad AKM DACs feeding the 8-channel RCA outputs, it's a focused SQ statement piece.

It's ALL about the SQ —nothing else. FLAC files didn't really get support for many Pioneer products until after the P99RS was out of production. You'll not hear any difference between uncompressed lossless USB and FLAC, nada.

I've just picked one up and will be feeding it via the lossless USB input.

I can"t wait!

Why are you set on flac files?
Wav files are high quality lossless
Flac is just a compressed version of a wav file

If you are looking to squeeze out more esque from your system it might come down to equipment, install, tune etc

Hi, I'd prefer to use wav files, Since there known to be the best sounding, and not compressed down at all.My problem is that I listen to a lot of the older rarer classic rock songs from the 70's and 80's ,and I have a lot of problems even finding them even in flac file form or even mp3 form. Was hoping to see if some company or even pioneer made a headunit that was equal to the sound quality and tuning capabilities of the Pioneer Dex-p99rs. Just looking for headunits the size of the Pioneer Dex-p99rs,alpine 7909,etc headunits that will play flac files.thanks

I,m still wanting to upgrade my headunit which is only an alpine 7909,for something at the flagship level like the pioneer dex-p99rs. but with the ability to play any file format, So I can pick which file format Iwant to use. Surely by now there must be a headunit like the pioneer that can play all the file formats.

Buy a good dsp and with your alpine it'll sound better than the 99...

That sony rsx gs9 looks interesting to me. It sounds high end, when I did a quick check on it,I,m just out of time to look up information and previews on it for today. Any other head units to preview for tomorrow when I get back to the computer would be great. Was beginning to wonder if there was anything being made like the pioneer dex-p99rs without the big screen, or having to hook up to a computer to tune it. thanks supernov4 for getting the ball rolling on what Iam really after.

Lossless USB, transferred from my CD collection to flash drives, using this high-quality software Exact Audio Copy

Honestly you won't have many options
The gs9 would suit your interior nice
Not old school but has that feel
I have never used one but heard for sq they are up there does not have built in amp and has muses op amps
But for settings I think you need to use an app

They don't make units that sound as good as the that anymore. Besides, 95% of the installs, you couldn't tell the difference between a $200 radio and a $2000 radio. The cars acoustics, speakers, speaker placement, and amps all play a huge role in sound quality. If you like Pioneer, check out the DEH-S7200BHS. It will play FLAC music.

Thanks for the heads up on the pioneer DEH-S7200BHS. It almost seems to cheaply priced to be high end long term quality at only 250.00. I,ve always paid about 1100.00 for each flagship head unit I,ve purchased over the years. Mabe the price has come down a lot since the 1987- 96 days of car audio. I,ll check it out,Really doesn't half to a pioneer ,can be any brand name,as long as its flagship quality.thanks
