Where to set sub amp level control knob before setting gains.

I picked up a Gladen SPL 1000C1 Amp to power my IMAGE DYNAMICS IDQ12 V.4 D4 12" sub, But my question is the control Knob that comes with the amp . Where do most put the knob level at, (before adjusting amp gain ?) - Min ? or half way ? , or all the way up ?

When setting up your Gladen SPL 1000C1 amplifier with the Image Dynamics IDQ12 V.4 D4 subwoofer, the control knob (often referred to as a remote gain knob) is used to adjust the volume level of your subwoofer independently from the rest of your audio system.

Here’s how to properly set it up:

1. **Initial Placement of the Control Knob**: Start with the control knob set to about the halfway point. This gives you a good baseline to start from. If it has a marking, that can help guide you as well.

2. **Adjusting the Amplifier Gain**: Before you make any adjustments to the control knob, set the amplifier gain properly. To do this:
- Ensure your head unit (stereo) is at a normal listening volume, typically around 75-80% of its maximum output.
- Gradually increase the gain on the amplifier until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly until the distortion disappears. This is where the amplifier is optimally set for your system.

3. **Fine-Tuning with the Control Knob**: Once the gain is set, you can use the control knob to adjust the subwoofer's level to your preference.
- If you find the subwoofer too overpowering, turn the knob down.
- If you need more bass, you can increase it, but keep an ear out for distortion.

4. **Listening Tests**: It’s advisable to listen to various types of music at different volumes to ensure that the balance between your subwoofer and the rest of the system is to your liking.

5. **Final Adjustments**: After a few listening sessions, you might want to go back and tweak the gain and the knob position until everything sounds just right for your taste.

By following these steps, you should be able to properly set up your subwoofer and enjoy a balanced sound. If anyone else has additional insights or experiences with this setup, please feel free to chime in!

All the way up or unplugged, should yield the same result. Then set with the appropriate sine wave. i.e. -10db @40hz

I was thinking of playing it safe and using a 40hz 0 db tone. Also some say set knob at mid point then adjust gain and others say max the knob first, I guess ill have to try both ways to see how i like.

If you use the 0db and set the knob half way you are pretty much doing the same thing as using the -10db tone and full on the knob but you won't know exactly where the safe cutoff is on the way to full tilt. You could run into clipping.

I guess im a little confused on it. :) So if i use the -10db 40hz tone and knob at max , and then set gains, then that means with knob at max ill be sure im not sending clip signal ? and ill then only be able to lower sub bass if it to much on certain music ?

Depending on the amount of power you have for the subs you should lower the knob all the way down AFTER you set those gain and turn on some music. You should be able to turn the bass knob to half way or slightly more. When you need the extra you should still have room on the knob. That is how mine is setup typically. Works pretty good.

My Gladen amp is listed as 980w @ 2ohm, And my sealed sub is Image dynamic IDQ12 V.4 D4
is 750 rms , so ill be calculating my gain off my subwoofer Specs , which calculating shows to be 38.7 a.c volt

So it will be able to handle 750w all day long basically. So if your voltage is more for say 900w then you will have headroom as well for when the music needs more. That sub will handle 1500w for short burst.
So ill set amp gain with a 40hz -5db tone with Bass knob at max and set ac volts to 38.7 . :)

-5db for daily, -3db or 0db for competitions has been my habit. I always jack up the sub-level to max at the hu so in the course of use it'll take 1 click more volume at the hu to introduce that clip I'm seeking under certain conditions otherwise generally the bass knob will be at 9-10 o'clock on music.
