question about RMS power

I have a 13w7 at 1,000 w and I feel like a 12 w7 at 1000 watts would sound much better considering the 13w7 needs 1500 watts the get to its full potential. thoughts? I'm just really not impressed with the 13 I got to admit.

If you have the room for the ported box, it would give you a much more output than changing from 1000 to 1500 watts would.

I have a sealed 12w7 that sounds pretty nice but nothing to write home about. In contrast, I have a ported pair of 10w7s that slam like a mofo blending in great with the 6.5 front stage. I will soon be porting the 12w7 for comparison.

Hands down going from sealed to a well designed ported should give you the output you're looking for. Even on the same power you'll likely gain noticeably.

If you have the extra space to give it's a no brainer, but get one FOR you. Configured for your vehicle and music tastes to really maximize it's potential

If you're determined to stay with a sealed enclosure, which does have advantages over ported, then the 13w7 will perform somewhat better in both SPL & distortion. OTOH, if you're chasing SPL/SQL, then consider a ported enclosure, which should net you at least 3db+ real world output.

Porting would be the next step up. This w7 have a flat BL curve, which means low distortion, in turn, that can make your sub lack the presence you're used to from a subwoofer.

Again, go ported if space allows for immediate gains. Maximize the gains by getting a custom design or have a knowledgeable builder involved. Its going to be more involved than buying a ported box off the internet. Getting your enclosure done or designed (I love diy) is totally worth it as the thing will be oriented towards your personal goals. Bass takes space and comparing sealed to ported is about as comparable as the physical size... here's an example.

Totally worth it to have it done right. Extension into the low 20s with that JL 40hz signature punch. On top of low delay and hi output. Its a great sub but too many just nuthug the sealed enclosures as most "esoteric" drivers have always been traditionally sealed to achieve sq results but most will feel a lack of output and try to throw power at that JL coil which is notoriously prone to failure when clipped.
