What to use to protect wires from heat/melting?

On my previous Jeep I ran the 0 awg down the wheel well and along the frame, back to the rear cargo area. Problem was, I used plastic sheeting and the exhaust started melting it. I even made sure to zip tie the sheathing away from the pipe, but it still got hot enough. Luckily it was minor and I found it in time.

my current Jeep has the turbo and runs a bit hotter inside the engine compartment.

what do you guys use to prevent this?

I am looking at heat shield insulated wire wrap and hope I’m headed in the right direction.

You are headed in the right direction. I used Heat Hose Fiberglass Wrap Shield Sleeve.
Good stuff.

This is what I am looking at. The black stuff may not work, as I have already run the wires and do Not want to pull them back out. It looks like the other option wraps around. And for appearance, I may see about shooting it with matte black rust oleum stove paint.

the wires I am running are going on the top area of the firewall, between the plastic engine cover and the actual firewall. The battery is on the passenger side, about mid bay. So the wires go across to the driver side and down into a hole (conveniently plugged for the clutch that is not there) into the cab.

i have one loom for a set of pod lights that go into a switch inside, one loom for a front cam, and one 0 awg amp wire with nylon sheething going inside, through that hole. I ended up modifying the plug by drilling a hole and inserting a grommet. The three wires fit perfect and I was able to simply twist the plug back into place.

the other wires ran in the same area are the loom for my power side steps.

I plan on running a second 0 awg wire to my other amp in the rear cargo area. This one will be going down the passenger side wheel well (inside, behind the plastic covering) and along the frame.
This is a Jeep Wrangler, which has several oem wires running in the same areas already

I also used the wrap-around type.

I ordered tesa tape and the A-team heat shroud stuff for areas closest to the exhaust. Also ordered the little tree pin things with zip ties attached to tidy everything up near the firewall. Hoping to be able to drill a few holes in the plastic plate near the crease of the hood in the rear to plug them in and wrap the loom. It’s been a long project, but it will pay off in the end.

You may consider running significantly oversized wire. More current draw means more heat so split the current up, lessen the wire load.

two of them are the 0 awg. One goes from the battery (about half way up the engine bay on the passenger side) across the back of the engine/firewall area. The other wires are for the pod lights, power steps, and front cam.

the other 0 awg is going to go down the quarter panel, behind the plastic skirt in the wheel well and back along the frame to pop up through a drain plug to the rear cargo area.

i actually just noticed the cheap plastic wire sheathing I have on the bundle is melting more, even though it’s way up on the hood. So, I am removing all of that and wrapping it with the tesa tape when it arrives.
