A lot of these protests have exposed other police of the same type of behavior that they're protesting against. It's going to be like Hong Kong, they initially started protesting because the extradition bill, and after all of the bullshit the police put them through it became about police brutality and accountability instead, can you blame them? When the government tried to appease them finally by canceling the bill they didn't stop protesting, should they have?
In my opinion there needs to be more than screening or training, there needs to be accountability. Qualified immunity needs to die. It hurts us as a society, and turns them into immune killers. The police should be held accountable in the EXACT same way as regular people, with the very few exceptions that they can make armed arrests for misdemeanors and private citizens can't, that's it. I would hope that's not an unpopular opinion, it benefits white people too.
I'm friends with a lot of cops, I have them in my family. I don't think they even disagree with accountability. I mean look at it from another profession's perspective: If only a few airline pilots bailed out of a plane with a parachute mid-flight do you think they'd fire them 100% of the time? More importantly, do you think they'd keep their pilot's license? How about a doctor? If only a few of them occasionally decapitate a patient during surgery do you think they'd be fired? Do you think they'd be able to go to another hospital in the next county over and continue practicing with their medical license? Of course not, people like this need to have their qualification to do this job suspended permanently in all of law enforcement in one rubber stamp by an indepedent 3rd party who isn't issuing them warrants 4 times a day. They should then be tried with the same scrutiny as a citizen's arrest. This is common sense, no? I think the people protesting would be happy with that.
