Make my subwoofer less sensitive to head unit volume?

Hi,

My subwoofer volume/power is affected by 1 volume notch to the point that 1 notch can be the difference between getting voltage drop that I am not comfortable with. The volume I can play at with a comfortable voltage varies greatly depending on the song. So I always have to be watching the voltage.

How can I tune my setup so that even with the head unit all the way up I maintain voltage on any song without giving up SPL on certain songs? I have an Android head unit with a compressor setting, would that accomplish what I want?

Thank you!

how did you set your amp gain?
Set the head unit just before distortion and then turned up the gain until my voltage got too low. I'm only able to give the sub ~900-1000W RMS and it's rated for 1500. It's not even close to clipping. If I use a 35hz sample to set the gain then a lot of songs underperform.
