What's up guys, so I had another thread about what the best SQL woofer is and it kind of went many different directions where you guys tried to "fix" my current setup. While I appreciate that, I have decided definitely, that I am upgrading my system in some way or another. But my problem is, due to my lack of experience/knowledge, I don't exactly know which route I should go; allow me to elaborate. I do not know if I should upgrade my box because I don't which woofer I should be getting
As previously mentioned, I currently have a ~1cuf sealed enclosure, with 2 10" RE S.E.X's. Now what I want to do is upgrade to single, higher quality, more expensive, woofer and ideally be able to feed it close to all 1100 watts. Using my current box, I could simply seal off one opening and throw a 10" in the other side. I was looking at the ICON's but they currently aren't available in 10". In fact there are many great series which I'm finding aren't available in 10's which is why I'm not overly enthusiastic about this route. And no, this box cannot be modified to fit a 12" - 10" is the max.
Option #2 , is getting a custom box made at a shop to better utilize what very little space is available in my trunk. My current box leaves a lot of gaps on the sides and on top. Depending on if I were to go fiberglass, which would pretty much grab every available square inch, or MDF with multiple cuts to create a complex shaped box, I should expect to see an increase in 0.5-1.0 cuf (need to go the shop to confirm), AND would now be able to use a 12" woofer. And instead of sealed, now using this extra airspace, I could MAYBE get away with a ported enclosure. The downside? This would cost me $400-$500...
So in a nutshell, my dilemma is - is buying an enclosure that allows me to go with a 12", and possibly even ported, as you guys all seem to love ported lol, worth the extra $$? On the contrary, what 10" subs can I feed ALL 1100 watts to and aren't for pure SPL? As mentioned previously I do definitely care about SQ.
I'm sure all of you are probably going to say something along the lines of "It's up for you to decide if it's worth it or not", and I get why you'd say that but I'm having a really tough time doing so, due to my lack of experience. I'm definitely not looking forward to going from 2 subs to 1, especially a 10" instead of a 12" , but if I had to guess, I'm sure I'd be content with the output from 1100 watts on a 10". But it's for this reason that I THINK I don't want a 10 that can really only handle 600-700 watts, in a sealed. Tbh part of the reason I'm considering getting this new enclosure is that I'm kind of OCD, and don't like the fact that there's some wasted airspace back there haha, but maybe that's silly.
Anyways I appreciate the help guys!
