hey i have a ? about the box?

here it goes, well my friend had a 15" inverted in a lexus IS300 where the guy customized the sub into 2 ports as if it looked like there is a box behind the sub but actually there is no box (sounds fanastic). the sub is inverted and when u put down the armrest you see the front of the sub with blue neons. it kinda uses the whole trunk as the box but i was wondering if a 12" or 15" xxx would work like that?

To be frank, I have seen somthing like you are talking about, but the individual lined the truck with fiberglass to seal all the air leaks, and to make a box like freq. He was using the cars body to resonate the sound. It was no where near as loud as a box, but it did work. To be honest there was way more work, and a lot less volume. I have built a box in a trunk with 2 ports that allowed sound waves to come out. But you have to figure the amount of airspace your SEALED trunk will provide, and I can almost bet it will be more than you need. Plus all the work is not really worth it to me.

It's called an infinite baffle setup. The volume of the trunk does not matter as long as it is larger than the Vas of the subs being used. The front wave and the rear wave need to be separated and basically the trunk sealed off from the rest of the car. This type of setup used to be pretty common. Benefits are efficiency, accuracy and low bass extension, plus most of the trunk is still usable. The drawback is very low displacement limited power handling, but you don't go with this type of setup with SPL in mind so that is not a big deal. Ideally, you need a higher Q woofer to work in this type of setup as there is basically no enclosure loading.
