Maybe cover the floor with 1/2" plywood?

Fill the cavity with Beanie Babies and cover it with the plywood. Use the carpet as a template.
If you use 3/4" you can screw the box to it to prevent it from flying around in sn accident.

I covered my the rear space in my vue with 3/4 mdf...everything is mounted down to it in some fashion or another

I used trunk carpet as a template, cut a sheet of MDF to fit. I cut that floor in half because I couldn't fit it through trunk opening.

Just wish MDF wasn't so expensive.

I actually like working with MDF. It's easy to cut and shape. Plus it takes glue very well.

I too generally use the factory carpet to make my templates. It's also a good idea to put layer of butyl damping material under the MDF too, prevents vibration chattering later on down the line.
