Xbox modding --> need some help, questions about softmods!

Will I have the same functionality if I softmod my Xbox rather than install a modchip?

What is the cheapest way to rip games to the HD and play them off of the Xbox?

What exactly does EvoX do? Is it just a dashboard or does it allow extra functionality.

Basically, I just want to be able to play DLed games on the Xbox, rip original games to the upgraded HD and play them. I saw that I can FTP to the Xbox and get the original game files then burn them to a DVD, no modchip required.

Lastly, what exactly is the benefit of a modchip if the same results can be accomplished with a softmod?

I've checked out http://www.xbox-scene.com already and I'm reading it now, but the tutorials are too vague and not very helpful.

Its pretty easy. I have the Action Replay if you're going that route. I don't rip any to the hard drive though, I just download them and burn them, then play them. To softmod it really, just put the right files on the Action Replay, put in Splinter Cell, go to load the savegame, then it will start the linux interface, allowing you to choose which interface you want to use. Then from there, the EvoX interface will start instead of the regular xbox bios, and won't check to see if the game is legitimate, then free games!

My old xbox didnt have a modchip, I believe it had UDH (Ultimate Dash Hack)

Basically, your xbox has a dashboard, the green globe with the 3 or 4 options to select from. By doing a softmod, instead of booting the stock dash, it will boot the new one whether you choose EvoX, Avalaunch, or w/e. I personally liked Avalaunch. They also have one that resembles the stock dash. To do all that, just do as vgeek said and then from there you should be able to FTP to the xbox when you have EvoX installed. So dont fret if your not sure what dash to use or about not liking it and being stuck with it. Thats when the FTP comes in, you can download new dashs and just replace that one file (i forget the name) and it all changes.
