XBL^2 recone oops

No there are several XBL^2 subs out there. Brahma, Re XXX 2005, AA Avalanche, Stereo Integrity MKIV, CSS SDX 12 and 15 are a couple. Also Jacob's new SQ sub may end up being xbl^2. I think XBL^2 is pretty awesome; I have several subs as testament.

and i dont get why 2 gaps..
Just think of it this way - For a given length of coil, once the windings get far enough away from the flux in the gap, the force drops off. Wouldn't it be cool of there was a second gap waiting to do it all over again before the force from the first one drops off?
You are facing a table. You stretch your arms out as wide as possible. There is an object just within reach of your left hand. Your goal is to move it as far as you can from left to right down the table, but without moving your body. You can only move the object as far as your arms will stretch out. Now someone is sitting to the right of you with their arms stretched as wide as possible, their left hand can just touch your right hand. How far from left to right can the two of you move the object down the table? This is XBL^2.

right with the intention of giving a flat BL curve, so the motor is giving force into the coil at the same rate at any point

Yes you are correct.

Take a look here:

The name may tie a few things together for you.

Your first XBL2 graphic was from the extremis.

I have designed a few other drivers using a similar system.

The total gap height is indeed divided into two sections.

But the coil needs to be centered or even slightly offset to get the correct linearization of the BL from maximum forward excursion to maximum rearward excursion.

XBL motors are a real pain to get produced. They require quite a high quality build house to get them done correctly.

is that the only motor that has 2 gaps?is that what make this motor great?

and i dont get why 2 gaps..

but thanks for showing this. as i learn something..
It's like LMS but in reverse with the gap varying width instead of the coil.

A number of midranges use this as well.

Welome, I didn't realize it was you! I don't know you but I've gone over your web pages. Beautiful stuff, indeed.

And a headphone driver if you can believe that!

I was just about to say the same thing, indulge my curiosity, you just happened to come across our posts about xbl^2 and decided to join in?

LMS is a little different.

There are three competing methods to produce pretty much the same effect.

A split coil is the easiest to implement. That is coil with a space in between to the top part and bottom part of the coil.

Cheap and very effective. It trades overall strength of the motor for a wider area of greater linearity. B&C uses this method.

The LMS wind has more layers on the top and on the bottom of the coil. Again in an effort to do much the same thing.

XBL does it with a linear coil and a split gap.

Headphones?

Why not. They are basically slightly overgrown tweeters.

Not quite, as there are two distinct gaps within that height.

i think he meant in a general sense.

Yep.

Found this by complete accident.

Laughed for quite a while about the video and thought what the heck.

Throw in a post.

You guys have a pretty good handle on the basics.

You phrased it better. Like looking at LMS the other way around might have made more sense.

Thanks for stopping by. Your products look excellent as well. Top contenders on my list if my mids or tweets ever need replacing, neither of which are in production anymore.
