WTF is an EV?

A friend of mine just put 4 12" EV speakers in his chevy blazer. Now i have never heard of EVs before. But when he turned them on, they were the loudest F'ing speakers ive EVER heard. It was almost too loud to listen to. Model number was evm12L. Gold EV on the centercap. Maybe someone can tell me what these things are all about?

http://www.google.com seems to be that electro voice is the brand, i didnt really see much on it, it looks like a guitar speaker, but the pic didnt have a gold logo like you said

eV's are mainly used for live sound reinforcement. monitors. PA. that stuff. whats interesting tho is most PA speakers lack excursion. but their sensitivity its through the roof a 97 db 1w/1m for a 1000rms 18" I know of for example

EV speakers came in my Marshall cabinet years ago.

Yes....most of them are designed with the main source of their output coming from the enclosure...horn loading, large ported, etc.

EV Speakers sound very good. They're also very cheap. I had some $20 computer speakers that were EV's, they were louder than the $200 creative alternative and sounded just as crisp. We use them at our church for loudspeakers and they sound excellent.

I've NEVER been dissapointed with electrovoice.

so all in all it doesnt seem like a total lame idea to do? I just like the extremely loud mids and highs that they produce. Its insane.
