WRX- $300-400 budget

You won't be able to find any after market speakers that will fit in stock location without spacers. There is 1.5-1.75 clearance to glass. So if you have to make spacers, why not go straight to 6.5 in front and 5.25 in back (if you have to have them). If you're lazy, you can buy some ready spacers http://www.iaperformance.com/product_info.php?cPath=44_45_2076_2178_2224&products_id=243&osCsid=c0c193fb66e4a264be88fa3a891238f4 but I don't recommend them. If you will get to big spacer, the speaker will hit plastic door panel.

This is what you're dealing with:

god d@mn!! how much clearance between sheet metal and door panel? thats baaaad, its not lookin good for him at all.

i have a wrx and have the same problems. i need some speakers but there is just no mounting depth. here's what i plan to do: make 6.5comps work in the front doors and get 6x9s to fit in the rear deck. I'm just going to forget about the rear doors as they are not worth the time.

I have a 2003. The front's have literally no room to play with. I put 6.5 infinity kappas into mine, but I had to make an angled spacer and even then I barely got the panels back on. Along with the spacer, I had to remove the raised part on the back of the door panel that went around the stock speakers, but I got them on and you can't tell there's after market stuff in there. It wasn't easy though. There's less than 1/4" between the speaker and the window when my window is rolled down.

For the rear speakers I dropped a 1/4" MDF spacer down into the door (through the window slot) and mounted my 3.5 speakers to that. I then mounted the spacer to the INSIDE of the door. Once again had just enough clearance between the magnet and window. Door panel fit without a problem like that. Mounted to the outside of the door, the door panel wouldn't go back on.

I have some pictures at home of what I did at home. It takes more time than normal and some creativity to get stuff into that car.
